What’s it all about?

Smørrebrød is much more than putting toppings on a slice of bread. These Danish open sandwiches are a work of art, all about contrasting flavours, textures and colourful combinations, turning simple ingredients into a satisfying meal.

In this relaxed, hands-on class, you’ll discover the Danish tradition of smørrebrød and learn how to create your own open sandwiches with a selection of homemade toppings and accompaniments.

We’ll be using a homemade Danish rye bread, the traditional foundation of smørrebrød, as well as a lighter bread option for those who prefer something less dense.

Whether you’ve tried smørrebrød in Denmark or are completely new to it, this class is a delicious introduction to one of Denmark’s most beloved food traditions.

What will we cover?

In this practical 75-minute session, we’ll explore how Danish smørrebrød is built and how to create combinations that balance flavour and texture. During the class we will:

– Discover the story behind Danish smørrebrød
– Learn about traditional Danish rye bread and its role in Danish food culture
– Prepare a selection of delicious toppings
– Learn simple techniques for balancing flavours and textures
– Assemble and decorate your own open sandwiches
– Enjoy your creations together
– Take away ideas and inspiration for making smørrebrød at home

There will be a vegan and a meat option alongside other toppings, and you can choose between traditional Danish rye bread and a lighter bread to suit your taste.

No previous cooking experience is required — just bring your appetite and curiosity about Danish food.

Who will be teaching?

Sonya is a Melbourne-based food educator with a background in public health nutrition and community cooking programs. Through Sonya’s Nurtured Kitchen, she runs cooking workshops focused on food literacy and practical skills that make healthy cooking easier and more approachable.
