Join us in the Gallery Shop for an afternoon with Sydney-based artist and maker HOSSEI. Through performance, sculpture, and installation, HOSSEI explores the potential of everyday things to act as vessels for joy and healing.

HOSSEI repurposes household items, industrial supplies, and deadstock textiles to create wearable costumes and accessories. Acting as both exaggerations and extensions of the body, his costumes affirm the potential of the spirit and endow everyday materials with new purpose. The artist also imbues each item with 'talismanic' properties; singing into bags so that the wearer can carry music with them, and placing lucky charms or blessings in the stitches of clothing to underscore their healing potential.

Meet the artist, enjoy a complimentary drink, and shop an exclusive range of his spirited clothing and accessories.

Snack is a pop-up concept store within the Gallery Shop designed to platform functional, affordable products made by emerging artists. Be the first to view and purchase new and exciting products, and get a chance to meet their talented makers.

Guest Biography

HOSSEI (b. 1985, Tehran) is a multidisciplinary artist with Persian, Turkish and Russian ancestry whose work addresses his heritage, fantasies and feelings, and notions of togetherness and healing. Through performance, sculpture, and installation, he explores the potential of everyday things to act as vessels for joy and healing. Acting as both exaggerations and extensions of the body, HOSSEI’s costumes are animated through euphoric live performances. As fantastical sculptures, his costumes affirm the potential of the spirit and endow everyday things with a new materiality and purpose. HOSSEI was Artist-in-Residence at UTS Galleries, Sydney from 2022–23, where he developed a capsule of products titled BLESSSENSE and an exhibition titled O (2023). His solo exhibition THUNDERBLOOM (2023) was presented at West Space, Melbourne, and he has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Artspace, Sydney; and Dark Mofo, Hobart.
