Snaps is back, baby!

Welcome to Snaptoberfest!

It’s October, so obviously we had to give this one a little bit of a theme. Think poetry, pints, spooky season and questionable decisions about what counts as a costume. Basically, Oktoberfest met Halloween and somehow ended up at a poetry night. No tricks, no treats and definitely no Lederhosen here, just poetry.

After a little venue drama, a LOT of searching and a brief moment where we wondered if Snaps was about to exit the chat stage left, we’re ready to do it all again, this time at a new venue! Join us on Thursday, 8 October at Milton Common for another night of poetry, spoken word, laughs and people putting their words into the world. Whether you’ve been performing for years, you’ve never stepped up to a microphone before or you’d rather sit back with a drink and listen, you’re welcome at Snaps.

Finish: approximately 8:30–9:00pm

Food and drinks are available at Milton Common, so come early, grab something to eat or drink and settle in before the poetry begins.

OUR OCTOBER FEATURE

We’re incredibly excited to welcome Gabrielle Saxberg, author of the newly released historical fiction novel As Loyalty Rises, as our featured guest. Come along to hear from Gabrielle and learn more about As Loyalty Rises, her newly released historical fiction novel.

THE OPEN MIC

Want to perform? We’ll have 20 open mic spots available on the night. You don’t need to be published, experienced or particularly confident. If you’ve got something you want to say, we want to hear it.

All forms of poetry are welcome, whether you write funny, sad, political, personal, weird, romantic, angry or completely impossible-to-categorise poems. Bring something you’ve been polishing for months, something you wrote yesterday, or those scribbled notes you wrote on napkins at the bar. This event is for our listeners as much as it is for our poets. Come along, grab a drink, sit back and enjoy the words.

ACCESSIBILITY

We want to be completely upfront about the accessibility of this venue. The Gallery at Milton Common has a lot going for it and we’re really excited to be bringing Snaps here for October. Unfortunately, the Gallery itself is not wheelchair accessible, which means this venue won’t work for everyone in our community.

That’s genuinely disappointing for us, because accessibility is a huge part of what Snaps is about and we want everyone to have the opportunity to come along, whether they’re performing or simply sitting in the audience. We don’t want anyone to arrive and only then discover that they can’t access the space, so we’d rather be honest about it from the beginning.

For now, this is a temporary home while we keep searching for somewhere that is genuinely wheelchair accessible and can become a regular home for Snaps. We promise we’re still looking. We want to find a space where everyone can get through the door, find a place to sit, hear the poetry and be part of the night. Until then, we’re going to keep looking for our home.
