Anita Gowers is a PhD candidate in the Australian National University's Centre for Art History and Art Theory, researching the Australian picture framing industry.
Within the burgeoning ecosystems of British settler art in Australia there was an integral influence that has been largely overlooked: the role of frame-makers. This presentation examines their influence on the visual enhancement of artworks and their role within the art ecosystem. Utilising an interdisciplinary approach that includes the innovative use of a graph database, thorough analysis of archival materials, and examination of original contemporary frames, the research highlights the role of frame makers. Revealed as more than just craftsmen, these individuals emerge as key players within Australia's art communities, with an impact that significantly transcends the mere production of frames.
