Event description

The upcoming Australian Indigenous Voice referendum will request voters to approve an alteration to the Constitution to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.

To ensure the Western Sydney community has access to diverse opinions and research, the Social Justice Network will host a screening of the Opening Keynote at the 2023 Universities Australia Conference by Professor Megan Davis, an informative and thought-provoking talk about Aboriginal history and colonisation. This will be followed by a panel discussion led by our Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Leadership), Professor Michelle Trudgett.

The panel will discuss the Uluru Statement from the Heart and whether the implementation of a Voice to Parliament will effectively acknowledge First Nations sovereignty in Australia.

This event is an opportunity to hear a wide array of perspectives on the upcoming referendum and to explore pathways for Indigenous self-determination.

If you have questions for the panel, submit them when you register.

Panel members to be announced soon.
