Ellen O’Connor
Both plays explore the theme of loss - specifically the loss, and potential loss, of a loved one - but they do so under entirely different circumstances and in very different stages of life.
THERAPY By Barbara Yazbeck
In Therapy, we are taken into a very different reality: the trials and tribulations of mid-life, with its no-time-to-come-up-for-air pressures and responsibilities. It explores, through the female protagonist, the times when we’ve barely had time to process one moment of trouble and loss, before we’re hit with another. Barbara Yaebeck’s piece is frenetic, edgy and unflinching but keeps you hooked with its truth, humour and relatability.
WATER BABIES by Maeve Hook
In Water Babies, Maeve Hook opens up the landscape of death and loss with beautiful, evocative metaphors, and richly layered imagery that is both mysterious and captivating. Against this she sets the quirky and witty banter of the protagonists, two teenage sisters, which is at one moment heartbreaking, and at another delightfully funny and entertaining. It is a moving and inspiring piece about our innate need for connection, as well as the incredible resilience that can emerge, even in the youngest ones among us, at times of great upheaval and loss.
