Event description

Soil Microbes: See Them, Understand Them, Keep Them

Healthy soil is teeming with life—microbes that drive nutrient cycles, support plant health, and build soil structure. Join Ellen and Georgina from EarthWhile Australia for an engaging 2.5-hour workshop exploring what soil microbes are, how to cultivate them, and why they are essential for resilient, productive soils.

Bring along a soil sample from your garden and examine your own microbes under the microscope. Whether you’re a home gardener, grower, or land manager, this session will give you practical insights into fostering a thriving soil microbiome.

Ellen and Georgina both studied the soil food web and soil microscopy with Dr Elaine Ingham and Dr Mary Cole - pioneers in this field. They are keen to share this information and teach practices that will assist in developing and nurturing healthy, nutrient rich soil. Their business Earthwhile is well known in Western Australia and beyond, being the first address for workshops and courses regarding soil microbiome, soil microscopy and soil health.

Our weekly farmer's market will be in full swing during your workshop, so it's worth arriving a little early to check out the stalls and maybe buy some fresh produce.

Perth City Farm is a community urban farm that supports connected, sustainable communities. Established on a former industrial site in East Perth, this polluted site has been lovingly rehabilitated by volunteers to become a Western Australian icon for environmental sustainability and community engagement. We provide space and opportunities to build community connections, and educate and enable people to live sustainably.
