SPECIALITY PRODUCT DEMONSTRATION and EXPERIMENTATION WORKSHOP - PRINT on paper and fabrics!

"SolarFast dyes only develop colour and become permanent upon exposure to sunlight (UV). This unique property means SolarFast may be used to create remarkably detailed photographs, photograms and shadow-prints on paper or fabric by harnessing the power of the sun! Anything you place on the painted surface to block the light will create a printed impression in a matter of minutes, whether a solid object (toys, tools, plants, lace, etc.), a photographic negative (an image digitally printed onto a transparency)* or shadow (from folds in the fabric or a 3D object). SolarFast dyes are also great for painting, tie dyeing, screen printing, stamping, batik and more—no heat setting, chemical or steam fixing necessary. The dye leaves fabric completely soft to the touch. On paper, it has zero relief and will not affect the texture of the surface whatsoever, making it a powerful tool for mixed-media arts".

VIOLET — Made by workshop participant - Beautiful colours!

Participants are to bring their own small selection of fresh foraged flowers, leaves, and/or pressed flowers and/or other items such as objets, lace, feathers, doilies, to utilise in their SolarFast prints. Please bring things to print on like a white t-shirt, cotton or linen fabrics and water colour paper pad. All other materials and equipment will be provided. I will have some pre-prepared acetate photographic negatives to use on fabrics and or t-shirts. Email me: if you have a t-shirt acetate request two weeks before the workshop.

Please BYO lunch, however, there are many eateries close by, There will be a lunch break at midday for 30 mins to sit down and stop work.

Katie Alleva is a local visual artist with over twenty years of art practice and exhibitions. She is a highly qualified Visual Art, Photography and mixed media teacher. Katie is a dynamic, creative facilitator with extensive knowledge, in visual arts, printmaking, cyanotype, trauma, wellbeing, and trained in Steiner education. She has worked as Steiner art and photography teacher for ten years and holds fourteen years teaching experience in numerous high schools across the Northern Rivers. Katie Alleva has a Bachelor of Arts Honours (First Class 1A) in "creative research" specialising in intergenerational trauma, migrants, cultural heritage, creative heritage and psychology, a Bachelor of Secondary Education (Sec. Education), specialising in photography, a Bachelor of Visual Arts specialising in Printmaking, Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, and a Certificate IV in Small business management. Katie recently exhibited at the peak body for printmaking and works on paper in Australia, the Print Council of Australia, in Melbourne's Art Precinct. She currently teachers specialist courses in Printmaking and drawing at Diploma level, Advanced Visual Arts at Murwillumbah Tafe.

Colour Selection — Workshop sponsored by Jacquard Products

Consider the colour possibilities of layering colours to create other colours. What happens when you try double and triple exposures? Build up layers to create abstracted imagery.

PHOTO ID. Image by Katie Alleva, copyright 2021. She has used cyanotype and violet SolarFast in a double exposure. The technique is called a photogram and wet cyanotype. Fresh ferns, petals and flowers are composed onto paper and then exposed to UV light (the Aussie sun!). The violet and cyan colours mix and merge to create an array of shades of light and deep purple, and Prussian blue, outlining the shapes and forms of the botanicals. Katie printed of a 55cm Kadhi Round hand made, acid free, cotton rag paper, 300 gsm.

What we can offer: Any participant cancellations, will be provided with a refund if we can successfully offer your place to another participant on our waiting list. In this case, the workshop cost, less a booking fee of 10%, will be refunded, once the replacement student has paid in full. This is at the full discretion of Katie Alleva.
