Barry's story so far:
I'm a fiddle player, songwriter and composer from Cullivoe, in the Northern parts of Shetland, which is where I spend my non-touring, non-sailing time.
I take a lot of my inspiration from language and dialect, and explore the possibilities these offer in my music, working in Shetland and Orkney dialects as well as English; right now I'm exploring a long-held connection with Norn and Nordic languages.
I've produced two albums (so far) of my own music, with the help of some very talented friends - listen at https://bandzoogle.com/albums
I've been part of groups such as ‘The Cullivoe Fiddlers’, France-based Americana trio ‘Tildon Krautz’, Dundee punk-bluegrass explosion ‘Wire and Wool’, and Shetland line-up ‘Rack and Ruin’.
In these early weeks of 2025 I'm focusing much of my energy on studying and learning; this will all feed into some new musical projects that will become clear over the coming months. I'll post updates on my blog https://bandzoogle.com/blog.
These projects promise to be something of a journey, and the destination is as yet unwritten - so there's lots to reveal and discover together!
I'm the meantime I'm continuing to tour ‘The Springbank Voyage’, with upcoming dates in Scotland and Orkney; I'm enjoying performing this music with some great new line-ups.
I run the Sessions and Sail musical sailing voyages and we'll be covering more miles than ever before in 2025.
