Songstresses and Storytellers
Event description
Dark. Intense. Melodic.
Gabrielle Kerr speaks truths. The young raconteur is an old soul watching this new world spin. Her introspective lyrics will draw you in as the songbird's melodies are crowed with hints of folk, Americana, blues and rock.
She shares the howling, haunting lyricism of Hozier, is inspired by the blues rock jams of Elle King, and is a melodic enchantress like Aurora.
Telling tales of life, death and all things in between. Often painting vignettes of feminine wrath or other such 'unseemly' emotions; her music is coloured by her love of mythology, poetry, and theatre.
No stranger to the stage she’s performed at festivals such as the Small Halls Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival, and the Urban Festival.
“…it would be easy to mistake her as someone who’s been releasing music for decades.” -Blank GC
Elegant and alluring, Malina Claire invites you into her most vulnerable, darkest mindsets. With a taste for all things orchestral and introspective, she approaches her music with the cinematic stylings of Lana Del Rey, the emotion of Phoebe Bridgers and the knack for storytelling of Lizzy McAlpine. Let her take you through her hardest moments, her inklings of hope and everything in between on her journey for self-discovery, emotional recovery and truth. The name Malina is derived from the Swedish Malin symbol which represents the phrase; “you have to face setbacks to be able to go forward”, permeating the core idea of her unique folk/chamber pop fusion which often details her experiences with domestic violence, sexual abuse and mental health.
She faced her trauma head on during her first year at the Queensland Conservatorium's Bachelor of Popular Music, which she has since graduated in 2018. During her time there, she came to terms with her hardships through songwriting, meeting a supportive community around her that not only helped her through, but enabled her to put these feelings and experiences into fully produced songs, bringing Emily Hollitt’s solo project dream to life. She released her first single Behind Closed Doors in 2018 under the name Emily Jane for the university's SEED programme where she was able to play these songs live for the very first time. Since then, she's changed her name but stayed true to the message.
Her leading single Behind Closed Doors made it to #13 Most Played on 4ZZZ on the week of its release as well as debuting at #66 on the triple j Unearthed charts. Currently, the track has amassed over 215,000 views on YouTube and over 6,000 streams on Spotify. Follow-up track Yesterday’s Coffee also found success, making the staggering leap from #100 to #44 on Unearthed in the matter of only 1 week!
Tiahn is a socially awkward sass queen who’s not great with talking about her problems but gosh darn it, will sing her heart out about them. Her keyboard-driven songs will give you the step-by-step of how she’s made it to be a 25-year-old Brisbane woman. Tiahn’s stories are baked in a delicious cake using recipes from legends like Florence + The Machine, Oliva Dean, Thelma Plum & Amy Winehouse to name a few. So, enjoy the no BS show.
