Hailing from Montreal by way of Budapest, Hungary, Sophie Lukacs is a kora player and singer songwriter. Trained on the violin in western classical music from a young age, a chance trip to Burkina Faso changed her musical direction when she discovered the kora: a 21-stringed harp-lute from the Mandingue empire. She moved to Bamako to study with kora legend Toumani Diabaté and stayed seven years, performing regularly with Malian superstars such as Vieux Farka Touré and Habib Koité.

Now based in Montreal, Sophie has forged a unique style completely her own. As a singer-songwriter, her performances are built around original works for kora and voice, interwoven with Hungarian folk tunes, and Malian Mandingue pieces. On stage, she is supported by cello, and percussion, and sings and presents her shows in English, French, Bambara and Hungarian. Sophie has played to audiences across North America, Europe and West Africa and recently released her debut album “Bamako” with Disques Nuits d’Afrique, featuring 2 tracks with the legendary Habib Koité.
