Experience the joyful and transformative power of kirtan, a simple and engaging sound yoga practice that incorporates mantra, music and meditation to awaken and uplift the heart and bring peace to the soul.

Singing mantra together is a joyful and accessible way to calm a busy mind and transform stress into a state of relaxation and deep inner connection.

This potent bhakti yoga practice helps us to feel gratitude for life, connect with our emotions, transform energy and offer our prayers and intentions to the world at large.

The evening will conclude with a deeply soothing and integrating sound bath incorporating the celestial sound of the alchemy crystal bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, hand pan and flute.

Sound Samadhi kirtan group have been serving the community in the Northern Beaches since 2011 sharing their love of kirtan. Sound Samadhi’s unique East meets West music fuses the traditional with the contemporary and features a variety of instruments including harmonium, guitar, Indian and western drums, manjira, flute and bass guitar.

This month features regular members Geeti (harmonium, manjira) & Gyan (guitar, flute, percussion), Garry Luke (bass), Jiva (mrdanga drum), special guests TBA.

WHAT IS KIRTAN?

This call and response practice is often referred to as the yoga of the heart and has its roots in India with sacred Sanskrit sounds.

Kirtan invites us to ‘sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think’ (Rumi). It helps to free ourselves from inhibitions and connect us with our innate flow of creative expression that was once so natural to us as children!

The mantras we sing from a variety of cultural traditions charge and vibrate our entire energy system, and help greatly uplift our emotions, mood and wellbeing.

This is a safe space to feel, let go, release and express whatever you need to. All is welcome here.

As we connect authentically to our own voice while also feeling the supportive energy of the group we also help uplift everyone!

WHAT IS MANTRA?

Many of us are familiar with using ‘mantra’ to connote a word, phrase or affirmation for us to focus on and repeat, which has a positive effect on our wellbeing and life, e.g. ‘Love,’ ‘I am at peace in this moment,’ or ‘I deserve to find true love.’

Mantra has the same meaning and usage in kirtan, except that yogic mantras are in Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. Better known examples are ‘Om’ (the Sanskrit equivalent of ‘Amen’ or ‘Amin’), ‘Namaste’ (meaning ‘greetings to your soul’) and ‘Shanti’ (‘peace’).

Scientific studies attest that chanting mantras like Om for ten minutes can decrease stress, anxiety and depression, relax the body, and bring the heart rate to a regular rhythm and blood pressure to normal levels.

According to yogic texts, Sanskrit mantras are the subtle sound vibrations of the universe and our bodies. Mantra chanting, like planting seeds, can help awaken and make available this energy within us to help fulfil our potential.
