MORE INFORMATION

OUR LANGUAGE IS CRAZY!

(And fascinating!)

English is considered one of the most difficult languages to learn to speak, read and write. Let’s face it, even as adults we still have trouble with spelling, reading and grammar. It can seem overwhelming for parents wanting to support their children. Where do you begin? How do you help children who are struggling? What resources should you use?

🌱 THE GOOD NEWS - THERE IS A WAY TO SIMPLIFY IT ALL

Our language can be broken down into building blocks: steps of knowledge that gently build on each other. Once you understand the foundations of sound and language and the big picture of how the steps work, everything will make more sense and you will be able to help your children. This system of steps is called the Phonic Hierarchy System - used properly it is the most effective system in teaching children to read (in Colleen’s over 30 years of tutoring reading experience).

🌱 TEACHING MADE EASY

We know you are busy, so we’ve made this as simple and straightforward as possible. Just what you need now for the powerful foundations. You’ll be amazed at how a little bit of knowledge will help make everything so much clearer.

🌱 YOU KNOW MORE THAN YOU REALISE

Because you can already speak, read and write, the knowledge you will learn will be easy for you to understand and will collapse our language into clear manageable steps.

🌱 YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW IT ALL TO MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Most children just need help over a particular block. Children are naturally intelligent and inquisitive, with an intrinsic desire to learn. Once they know the foundations and feel confident, they are likely to return to self-motivated learning and will rarely need your input. This Workshop will give you the skills to help get your children over the bumps, boost their confidence and help get them back on track.

🌱 BUILDING CONFIDENCE IS KEY

Knowing how to build children’s confidence is one of the essential elements of the workshop. A child’s confidence impacts every aspect of their life - not only with speech, reading and writing, but with all of their schooling and beyond: Sport, Music, Art, Hobbies, Interests, Work, Travel, Relationships and more. The willingness to have a go, to back themselves and be willing to make a mistake are all important lessons for life. This workshop will help you explore these qualities with your child.

🌱 20 MINUTES A WEEK IS ENOUGH TO CHANGE PATTERNS

Professional tutoring sessions are once a week for 45 minutes. Much of the session is taken up with conversations with parents and building rapport with the child. Yet still these sessions change lives. 20 minutes a week of dedicated time, plus casual sprinklings throughout the week which will come naturally to you, will be enough to change patterns and help get your child back on track.

🌱 SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE RESOURCES - DO THE TEACHING FOR YOU.

Based on her over 55 years experience in the teaching and tutoring professions, Colleen has pulled together the most effective resources to back up what you will learn in the Workshop. With your new understanding of sounds and language, the resources will make sense to you and will help guide you and your child through the steps where needed, thus making the process easy and fun.

*Only the essential elements

*Affordable and Minimal.

*Resources containing Step-by-Step Guidance if you need it to help your child over a bump.

🌱 DO I NEED TO PURCHASE THE RECOMMENDED RESOURCES?

No. However, they are the best that Colleen has found that most accurately reflect the Phonic Hierarchy System (the Building Blocks you will learn) so they may be the easiest way to guide you in supporting your child. They are affordable and you are likely to only need one or two - depending on the level your child is at. Workbooks are around $25 each.

🌱 WHAT AGE AND STAGE IS THE WORKSHOP APPROPRIATE FOR?

As this is a Foundations workshop, it will be most beneficial for parents with young children in the early stages of the language journey - from birth to age 10. However, it will benefit all parents no matter the age and stage of your child as the foundations are a prerequisite for all the other steps and - coupled with the resources - it may be all you need.

🌱 MY CHILD HAS A UNIQUE LEARNING DIFFICULTY - WOULD THIS WORKSHOP HELP?

Absolutely. This program introduces reading from the simple to the complex. It is simple and builds slowly. The practice within the program consolidates knowledge. This allows children with learning difficulties such as Dyslexia to successfully move through the steps at their pace. Children with difficulties may just need a little more practice, patience and encouragement on each step, but the principle of learning remains the same.

🌱 FURTHER SUPPORT IF NEEDED

If required, we offer assessments and more workshops/resources to empower parents for children further along the Steps or with more challenging blocks.

🌱 PLEASE NOTE:

We highly recommend that both parents/caregivers attend this workshop to ensure everyone is on the same page when working with their children. A consistent approach is valuable.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE - WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE:

✅ 1. KNOWLEDGE.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LANGUAGE

You will learn the Building Blocks of our language and how it all fits together using the Phonic Hierarchy System. This fundamental knowledge will collapse our language into understandable chunks and underpin everything you do with your children in future. You will understand how best to help them now and what to do if they get stuck in future - how to help them get back on track.

✅ 2. SKILLS.

HOW TO TEACH IN A WAY THAT BUILDS CONFIDENCE AND CONNECTION.

You will learn skills in how to best teach and guide your children. Including how to boost their confidence and inspire their love of learning and reading. Our aim is for reading and learning to be quality time between you and your child, something you both enjoy.

✅ 3. RESOURCES.

ALLOW THE RESOURCES TO DO MOST OF THE TEACHING FOR YOU

Based on her 55 years experience in the teaching and tutoring professions, Colleen has pulled together the best resources to support you and your children through the Phonic Hierarchy System. These resources will do the teaching for you and guide your child up the building blocks of language, step-by-step and at a gentle pace.

The program builds slowly, in 12 easy steps, with each step consolidating what was learned on the previous one. This simplifies everything and ensures there are no surprises. Children continue to grow in confidence and move onto each next next step at their own pace. Children with specific difficulties may need a little more patience and encouragement from you in the beginning, but the principle of learning remains the same no matter where your child is at on the steps.

A NOTE ON SPEECH ISSUES:

HOW THIS WORKSHOP RELATES SPECIFICALLY TO SPEECH ISSUES:

Speech is sounds. Speech is made up of the combination of sounds. For example, the sounds ‘m’, ‘u’ and ‘m’ make up the word ‘mum’. Teaching a child to hear and make the sounds correctly is the foundational step of learning to read and write. In fact, most children who have reading difficulties have started with speech difficulties - there is often a difficulty in recognising individual sounds.

This is why understanding sounds is essential to this program and also why it is so useful for children with speech issues. We will show you how to teach your child, to hear, differentiate and repeat the sounds - including beginning, middle and end sounds. You will learn the physical aspects of how we make sounds with our voice, tongue, teeth and throat and therefore be able to model to your children how to form the sound. These are all essential practices for correcting speech issues.

ADDRESSING THE WORLD-WIDE SHORTAGE OF SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS

The processes we use are similar to those used in speech pathology sessions, except with this program, your child will also be learning to read and write along the way. So, while you are waiting for an opening with a speech pathologist, this program is a valuable alternative and may, in-fact, be all you need.

FACILITATORS

🔹COLLEEN KELLY

* Bachelor of Education

Colleen was a teacher from age 19 to 50 (30 years). She gained much experience in varied school environments including: teaching in both Private and Public Schools; working with and teaching Children with Special Needs and; teaching in Remote Indigenous Communities. With a passion for working individually with children, Colleen eventually left teaching to begin her own tutoring business. Colleen trialed various systems of teaching children to read over her career and eventually found the Phonic Hierarchy System. The Phonic Hierarchy System is an old system rarely used these days for teaching reading. However, in Colleen’s experience, it the best program by far, to teach children who have difficulties with Speech, Reading or Writing. For the past 25 years Colleen has continued her highly successful private business tutoring children in Reading using a combination of the Phonic Hierarchy system and her own extensive knowledge. Colleen is keenly aware of the gaps in our education system, how easy it is for children to fall behind, as well as how powerful this program is for getting children back on track.

Colleen’s passion is to be a catalyst in the shift for children who lack confidence in speech, reading and writing. Colleen brings her passion and wealth of knowledge and experience to the SOUNDS AND LANGUAGE Workshop, giving parents the understanding, skills and resources that have proven so effective in her own work with children. Parents will be empowered and have the confidence to address issues directly with their child’s teacher.

🔹NATASHA KELLY

Bachelor of Behavioural Science - Majoring in Psychology

* Positive Parenting Program Facilitator

Natasha is Colleen’s daughter and shares her mother’s passion for empowering children and families. Natasha has worked in varied professions that focus on the wellbeing of children, including: Child Protection, Youth Work, Youth Detention, Youth Supported Accomodation, Juvenile Justice and Parent Visitation Centres. Natasha is a trained Facilitator of the Positive Parenting Program and works with families in a super-nanny style support role: helping parents transform patterns in their home environment, fostering more peace and joy. From 2008 until 2010 Natasha took over Colleen’s tutoring business. During these two years, Colleen continued to train and mentor Natasha in the Phonic Hierarchy system and positive-centred teaching techniques. This in turn inspired Natasha’s own love of language and appreciation for how her Mother’s work transforms lives. Since 2010 Natasha has been deepening into other interests of interest including: the psychology of relationships, healing, and exploring our potential. For the past 10 years she has been sharing this work through creating and facilitating community Events and Workshops and brings this passion for creating powerful group experiences to the Sounds & Language Workshop.

🔹COLLEEN AND NATASHA

Colleen and Natasha are excited to bring together their complementary skills, wisdom and experience to create the SOUNDS & LANGUAGE workshop. Their intention is to make this workshop a rich and inspiring experience that will make an important and positive difference in the lives of children and families.

FAQ’S

🌱 WHAT IF MY CHILD IS OLDER AND HAS MORE COMPLEX READING OR SPEECH ISSUES?

Like every issue, the earlier you can catch it the better. However, we have ways to help no matter what step of the phonic hierarchy your child is on and we can help you pinpoint that step. Of course we can’t teach everything in one Workshop. However, we have focussed on the most important aspects that will give you a great foundation.

As this is a Foundations workshop - it will be most beneficial for Parents with young children in the early stages of the language journey - from birth to 10. However, it will benefit all Parents no matter the age and stage of your child as the foundations are a prerequisite for all other Steps and - coupled with the resources it may be all you need.

🌱 WHAT IF MY CHILD ONLY HAS SPEECH ISSUES BUT CAN READ AND WRITE?

This program will teach you, to teach your child, how to HEAR, DIFFERENTIATE and REPEAT the sounds - including beginning, middle and end sounds. You will learn how to MODEL the correct sounds to your children. All of which will be useful as they move up the scale of reading and writing. (For more information, please read our section titled “A Note on Speech Issues” in the main text above).

🌱 WHAT IF MY CHILD HAS NO SPEECH ISSUES BUT STRUGGLES WITH READING AND WRITING?

Most children who have reading difficulties have difficulty in recognising individual sounds. Teaching a child to understand and differentiate sounds is the foundational step of learning to read and write. Understanding sounds is essential to this program and is why the program is so effective. So while your child may be able to speak well, this understanding will be invaluable in helping them learn to read and write.

🌱 MY CHILD HAS A UNIQUE LEARNING DIFFICULTY (eg DYSLEXIA) - WOULD THIS WORKSHOP HELP?

Absolutely. This program introduces reading from the simple to the complex. It is simple and builds slowly. The practice within the program consolidates knowledge. This allows children with learning difficulties such as Dyslexia to successfully move through the steps at their pace. Children with difficulties such as dyslexia may just need a little more practice, patience and encouragement on each step. But the principle of learning remains the same.
