Event description

It's not what jazz is, It's what jazz does - Ronny Ferrella

Sydney Improvised Music Association presents:
Space Is The Place: Phil Slater Quintet
As part of the Jazz:NOW program

Phil Slater is a trumpeter and composer who resides on the stunning coast of Illawarra. Surrounded by nature, with the calming scent of the ocean only a breeze away – Phil’s music is heavily influenced by one of Australia’s many terrestrial paradises.

As a composer and bandleader, Slater’s improvisations are open and textural with melodic and minimalist narratives that can only be attained through his distinctly unique vocabulary.

“Having assembled a band capable of matching his own bristling invention, [the band] exercise a restraint that’s makes their individual expression entirely subservient to Slater’s fresh vision of collective music-making.” – John Shand.

Phil Slater – trumpet
Matt Keegan - tenor saxophone
Matt McMahon – piano
Brett Hirst – bass
Simon Barker - drums
