Event description

Palliative Care Tasmania’s ‘Speaker Series’ is a great mix of industry experts covering specialty topics in end-of-life care including diverse topics such as legal, guardianship, finance, mental health, grief and more.

This is your chance to access specialty information that informs the broader supports available for someone diagnosed with a terminal illness/ who is older and frail and for those that are supporting/ caring for them.

Guest Speaker: Jay Chipman

Jay Chipman faced a battle with cancer in 2014–15, spending almost a year in hospital while raising her two young children. It’s from that experience that she recognised the importance of quality family time and established Homely Retreats in 2018 – a respite service for Tasmanians affected by cancer.

Jay has been nominated for several awards, including the Australian of the Year Local Hero award in 2022, which recognises her work in the Not-For-Profit and cancer support space.

Topic: Connecting families through respite experiences

For the past four and a half years, Jay has dedicated her time to founding Homely Retreats. A charity which provides personalised support and nurtures families as a unit during their cancer journey. Jay has been a substantial contributor in changing the way that we think and acknowledge the support needs of families who are affected by cancer across Tasmania.

Jay and her team personally recognise these added challenges families face and their mission is to provide opportunity for rest, recharging and creating positive memories, no matter the outcome of their journey.

Jay will explore the following with us:

  • The effects that a parent who is experiencing cancer treatment has on the family dynamic.

  • The benefits of 'quality family time' on individuals health.

  • How illness in the family affects the family unit as a whole.

This session will be recorded and sent to registered individuals.
