About Special Olympics

Special Olympics Australia is part of a global movement using sport to create greater inclusion for people with intellectual disability and/or autism.

Special Olympics WA provides opportunities for people to get active, develop skills, build confidence, make friends and feel part of a welcoming community.

What is Unified Sports?

Unified Sports brings people with and without intellectual disability and/or autism together to learn, train and play as teammates.

Programs are social, supportive and beginner-friendly. They focus on participation, skill development, confidence, friendship and having fun through sport.

No previous experience is required.

Weather-appropriate clothing, such as a hat, sunscreen or raincoat

Who can join?

This program is open to:

Special Olympics athletes
Participants with intellectual disability and/or autism.

Unified partners
Participants without intellectual disability or autism who join the program as teammates.

Unified partners may be friends, family members, carers, support workers, students, volunteers or other community members. Someone who supports an athlete may also choose to participate as a Unified partner, but providing support is not an expectation of the partner role.

What can I expect, and why should I join?

Athletes and Unified partners learn, practise and play together. Sessions may include skill development, games, teamwork and social activities.

Unified Sports follows the principle of meaningful involvement. This means everyone should:

have opportunities to participate
have a meaningful role
contribute and use their skills
learn and play alongside their teammates
be treated with respect
participate safely and enjoyably

Activities may be adjusted so people with different skills, abilities and confidence levels can participate meaningfully.

By joining the program, you can try a new sport or build your skills, stay active, develop confidence, meet people, make friends and experience inclusion through teamwork.

How do I register?

Please complete a separate registration for each participant.

You can provide information about health, communication, accessibility or support needs during registration. This helps us create a safe and positive experience.
