Amongst the many struggles of UNSW students being in on and off lockdowns, student-athletes have seen a spanner thrown into their sporting journeys.

Sport at a Stop Sign explores the perspectives of student-athletes as they discover their way around on and off lockdowns at the peak of their sporting careers.

Matilda McDonell
Tilly is a member of the Giants Super Netball Team having gained a contract straight out of school at 18 years of age. Tilly is also studying a Bachelor of Law and Psychological Science here at UNSW. Last year and this year Tilly has spent a lot of time interstate living and training 24/7 with her team mates in order for the Suncorp Super Netball Competition to continue most teams had to re-locate. Tilly did continue with her studies against this back drop which did create some challenges along the way.

Gearoid Towey

Three-time Olympic rower and former World Champion, Gearoid Towey has worked in athlete personal development for Western Sydney Wanderers Football Club and the New South Wales Institute of Sport. Since he retired from rowing at the Beijing Olympic Games, he became aware that athlete transition is a serious issue affecting thousands of people and that a lot more can be done to help athletes prepare for the day they must move on.

Henry Hutchison
Henry is two time Olympian having represented Australian in Rugby 7s at Rio in 2016 as a fresh faced 19yo in his 2nd year at UNSW. He has recently also returned from the the Tokyo Olympics. Rugby 7s has been his full time job since 2015 and he has been plugging away at his 3 year Commerce degree throughout these years as he has had to go slowly due to the huge amount of training and international travel that comes with international Rugby 7s. Henry has also had to deal with COVID restrictions imposed and make necessary adjustments to training and competition.
