Event description

Event 2: Inclusion & Diversity; Engaging the Disengaged
7th July, 7pm

As you may know, teenagers face a lot of challenges, physically, mentally, socially and we can't forget emotionally!
From hormonal and body changes, to social hurdles and not 'fitting in' - there are many things that they need support in navigating. If you are a parent, teacher, coach, or supporter of a young person, you will know what we mean!

The Lansdowne Hub series seeks to utilise the fantastic new Marlborough community facility, bringing locals together for meaningful discussion and knowledge-sharing. The central theme is all things youth wellbeing - looking holistically at aspects that benefit our young people including sport/recreation, health/wellness, and empowerment from adults. In the second night of the 3-part series, we'll explore how to better support our disadvantaged, disengaged or detached youth. Perfect for parents, adult supporters, and leaders of young people who don't fit into the neat little boxes that society tries to put them in- you will leave this event feeling inspired and armed with tools to better support & empower the young people in your world.

Key speaker: Simon Mareko

Simon is the Sector Strategic Lead at Ara Taiohi, the Peak Body for Youth Development across Aotearoa. A wearer of mutliple hats, Simon is also working with Sport NZ on implementing the 'Active Recreation for Rangatahi' plan - so you know he's the real deal when it comes to promoting all things youth. Ara Taiohi work with organisations across the youth sector ecosystem to ensure best outcomes for young people. As part of this korero, you'll learn about 'Mana Taiohi' - their principle based framework that guides the way people work with young people. Ara Taiohi, alongside a group of epic youth, have travelled across the country providing trainings and support to various sectors.

Inclusion and diversity are intersectional issues - depending on the group in question, the ways to create better inclusion will vary greatly. With this in mind, after an inspiring journey into Simon's world of Ara Taiohi, we will have what we like to call a 'speed dating' round. More speakers from diverse perspectives will be available to hear from/discuss with in short engaging rotations, including Disability Sport on how disabled rangatahi can be better supported, a coaching perspective on diversity/inclusion, and Talei who is an incredible young person herself!

Designed and delivered by Sport Tasman's Mahina Henry-Campbell and Lily Joiner, two young women themselves. Come along for inspiring discussion, new connections, and to learn something new. Food platters and beverages are included in your registration, with $10 of every ticket going back into the community.

For event #2, all profits will go to Box On Boxing, supporting their provision of accessible youth development and wellbeing through the discipline of boxing.
