Working in aged care and looking after older people can be very rewarding. But sometimes it can be difficult or stressful. The people you provide care for may have experienced trauma, loss and grief in their lives and this can have an effect on you.

This free webinar will explore practical strategies to help individuals, teams and organisations manage stress and improve wellbeing.

A panel of trauma experts and senior management and wellbeing staff working in the sector will discuss a range of practical wellbeing strategies for individuals, teams and organisations. We will also discuss a framework for managing potentially morally injurious events. Relevant tools and training materials that are being developed in consultation with the sector to assist staff and management will also be presented.

Speaker bios

Andrea Phelps has over 20 years of clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of posttraumatic mental health problems. She led the development of the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Acute Stress Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Complex PTSD, and co-led the development in 2020 of Moral Stress Amongst Healthcare Workers During COVID-19: A Guide to Moral Injury.

Nicole Sadler is a clinical psychologist with an in-depth understanding of issues and challenges for individuals working in high risk organisations. She has worked on mental health strategic reviews, policy and training development projects, and research projects for health and frontline workers, police, emergency services and other government agencies at Commonwealth and State levels.

Anne-Laure Couineau is a psychologist and leads Phoenix Australia’s work to promote best practice and service improvement for organisations
that support people exposed to trauma, as well as leading the promotion of
workforce wellbeing in organisations whose employees are exposed to trauma.
She has extensive experience in the field of complex trauma and interpersonal violence.

Kellie Whelan has a Bachelor of Nursing (University of SA) and Graduate Certificate Health Administration (Flinders University). With over 20 years’ experience within the aged care sector, Kellie has a broad and deep experience from the ‘ground-up’ through clinical roles to executive management level. She has served in senior leadership and management positions for over 15 years. Kellie has successfully implemented a philosophy of care for RSL Care SA as well as a leadership development program for its middle-level leadership team.

Felix Cheng is the Wellbeing Manager for Benetas. With a background in OHS and social psychology, his philosophy on wellbeing is underpinned by Martin Seligman’s positive psychology. He is passionate about taking a whole person approach to wellbeing and extending wellbeing benefits beyond the workplace to help employees find lasting fulfilment, meaning and purpose. In 2020, he was instrumental in implementing strategies in supporting employees through a COVID-19 outbreak.
