STAGES Podcast is live for the first time at Powerhouse Ultimo. Hosted by Peter Eyers, the podcast will be presented as a live event over three nights as part of Powerhouse Late x Vivid Sydney series.

STAGES podcast is a vital chronicle of oral histories from across Australia’s rich arts landscape. Over 5 years it has built a loyal following and was awarded Best New Podcaster at the 2019 Australian Podcast Awards.

Over three nights we celebrate what makes Sydney unique: the artists who push boundaries, the creative leaders who build community and our city’s distinct diversity and queer history.

GLOBAL STORIES with Producer Carmen Pavlovic

Global Creatures has made its mark around the world with inventive productions of stage musical adaptations from the films Strictly Ballroom, King Kong and Moulin Rouge. These adaptations are vivid in their flamboyance and visual impact. CEO of Global Creatures Carmen Pavlovic shares the story of the company and the world domination of the current hit show, Moulin Rouge.

Also on the night, fashion with Beautiful Freak in the Machine, curated by David Bonney.

FLAIR with Costume Designers Jennifer Irwin and Julie Lynch

The theatre costume is a vital element in the communication of narrative. It completes a character, offering an aesthetic which informs the audience, providing a vivid insight to the world of the play.

Join two leaders in the field of costume design – Jennifer Irwin and Julie Lynch. Creative women who have conquered world stages, together they enable an easy, thrilling, and powerful access point into the art of costume design in the theatre.

Also on the night, a celebration of Western Sydney creativity and the role of ballroom as a place of self-expression, identity, inclusivity and family, curated by Father Silky Xander and Jamaica Moana.

DRAG ROYALTY with iconic drag queens Miss 3D and Cindy Pastel

Miss 3D and Cindy Pastel are two of Sydney’s most iconic drag queens, originating in the 70’s and still performing today.

Miss 3D came from Ballarat to Sydney in time to join the cast of Synthetic Diamonds, the last performance of the legendary radical drag troupe Sylvia and the Synthetics, at Paddington Hall in 1977.

Cindy Pastel debuted in 1979 at a talent quest at Patches in Oxford Street. She didn’t win, but hostess Trixie Lamont offered her full-time work, and she soon gained fame as the original foul-mouthed drag queen.

3D and Cindy performed together in The Showbags at the Albury Hotel, and both went on to have legendary careers as icons of the Sydney drag scene. The main character in Priscilla Queen of the Desert was modelled on Cindy, and Miss 3D starred in countless shows, as well as becoming the cake queen of Sydney, with her designs for the baking competition fundraisers for the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation out-ranking all competitors.

Expect some fur to fly as the two grand dames of drag feed off one another in this unique interview.

QUEER with Artistic Director Declan Greene

Declan Greene is the Artistic Director of the Griffin Theatre Company. This champion of new Australian works has made a vivid impression through his contribution to the field, employing dazzling command and invention to make Queer Theatre.

In 2006, Declan co-founded Sisters Grimm, a resonant company that has cultivated a unique style of queer experimental theatre renowned for its accessibility. Sydney audiences may recall his productions of Calpurnia Descending, Summertime in the Garden of Eden, Little Mercy, La Traviata, and The Homosexuals or ‘Faggots’.

Also on the night, an exploration of Queer history and celebration, curated by Johnny Allen, C Moore Hardy and Dino Demetriades.
