State of Practice - Crafting the Future of Architecture in Ōtautahi Christchurch

Kia ora,
We are delighted to host a symposium on the evening of September 23rd at The Pantry (Visions Restaurant), U Block, Ara City Campus, from 5:30 pm to 8:15 pm. This event is a collaborative initiative between the NZIA and Ara’s Department of Engineering and Architectural Studies, aimed at showcasing and discussing impactful projects shaping the architectural landscape in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The symposium will explore critical themes such as innovations in sustainable design, the integration of te ao Māori, and ways to strengthen the connection between architectural practice and education. Our goal is to mobilise insights, and facilitate discussions on the progress of Architecture in Christchurch and enhance professional networks through this symposium.
The draft agenda is as follows (subject to change):
- 5.30 pm - Event opens - canapes and drinks served
- 6:00 pm - Welcome by Huia Reriti (NZIA President)
- 6.15 pm - Six presentations on the “State of Practice” with the key themes:
- a. Through the Local Lens Part I (macro-scale): Joseph Hampton from W+M
- b. Through the Local Lens Part II (micro-scale): Andrew Just from Field Architects
- c. Sustainability in Practice Part I: Vanessa Carswell from Jasmax
- d. New ideas revived traditions Part I: Jane Rooney from Architectus
- e. Integrating Mātauranga and Te ao Māori: Peter Dick from W&M/ex student of Ara
- f. New ideas revived traditions Part II: Jasper van der Lingen
- 7.15 pm - Break
- 7.30 pm - Q & A from the audience and a panel discussion hosted by Jessica Halliday, the director of Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City Making in Christchurch
- 8:00 pm - Closing by Dr. Adam Khan, Academic Manager Architecture studies and Interior Design at Ara
- 8:15 pm - End of event
