STEEL CITY SMACKDOWN!

Bringing roller derby to Whyalla for the first time ever, this event sees some of Adelaide Roller Derby's league members playing against one another! 

Will you be barracking for the TORNADOES or the PHANTOMS?! Named as an homage to original two roller derby teams from Adelaide in the 70s, the tornadoes (red) and the phantoms (black) are a mash up of skaters from ADRDs home teams. 

This event will be held at the Whyalla Recreation Centre - 5 Racecourse Rd, Whyalla Norrie SA 5608.

Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played by two teams of fifteen members. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide.

Game play consists of a series of short scrimmages (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer (who wears a unique designation on the helmet; currently a star) and four blockers to skate counter-clockwise around a track. The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.

Adelaide Roller Derby Inc. aims to develop a group of women who are committed and passionate about the sport of flat track roller derby. We are a non-profit Association, run by the skaters and for the skaters and dedicated to promoting sport over spectacle. Safety, athleticism and teamwork are highly regarded values for Adelaide Roller Derby as we structure an empowering and enduring experience for the women of Adelaide.
