Enhancing Australia's Defence Capabilities through Industry-Academia Collaboration

You are invited to learn about research capabilities of the University of South Australia and how they could be beneficial for the Defence Industry.

First, Darryn Smart, Acting Chief, Sensors and Effectors Division, Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), will speak about how DSTG, industry & UniSA are working together to ensure Australia maintains a tactical advantage. Then, staff from the Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE) at UniSA will present about their AR and VR research and how it can be applied to address the needs of the defence sector.

Following the presentations there will be hands-on demonstrations of the research capabilities. You are also invited to come along to the DTC Networking event, sponsored by University of South Australia, which will be held in the MC Building from 5.00pm - 7.00pm. As part of the networking event, attendees will get the opportunity to have a hands-on experience trying many of the IVE AR/VR technologies and talk to IVE researchers.

Darryn Smart, Research Leader Intelligent Weapons Systems, Defence Science and Technology Group

Mr Darryn Smart is the Research Leader Intelligent Weapons Systems in Sensors & Effectors Division at Defence Science Technology Group (DSTG). Mr Darryn Smart has worked for DSTG for over 30 years. He has chiefly worked in the fields of Communications Electronic Warfare and Counter Improvised Threats, contributing to and leading several advanced Radio Frequency based tactical and strategic Defence capabilities. From 2011 to 2017 he led DSTG’s Force Protection Electronic Countermeasure program to counter Remote Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), which has been built into a world leading capability in practical countermeasure development for these threats that supports military operations and has saved the lives of many servicemen and women. He was the team leader responsible for the REDWING Force Protection development program, which resulted in sales of over 280,000 units to Afghanistan Security Forces, and estimated $240 million injection into Australian industry.

The Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments

The Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE) is the largest research centre for Augmented and Virtual Reality in the Southern Hemisphere. Comprised of eight research groups and over 140 researchers from three faculties, it conducts a range of multi-disciplinary research in a wide variety of domains. Over half of IVE current projects are for the Defence, and includes work on crew station design, VR training, sensor visualization, human factors, collaborative systems and other areas. IVE has significant capabilities in AR, VR, human centred design, cognitive science, psychology and other areas relevant to the needs to the Defence Industry.
