The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance presents Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians, a breathtaking and transporting work that represents the power of minimalist music through hypnotic pulsing rhythms, ecstatic harmonic progressions, and the shared joy of experiencing powerful live performance. This performance celebrates 50 years since the work's premiere in 1976 changed the genre of minimalist music, also marking the year of Reich's 90th birthday.

Featuring an extraordinary ensemble of musicians from the Monash Percussion Studio, Monash Piano Department, School of Music faculty, and postgraduate artists, this is a concert not to be missed.

Monash Percussion Studio concerts champion the music of our time and place via the exploration of Australian music, significant works of the international percussion canon and new interdisciplinary collaborations. Students develop professional skills in interpretation of notated repertoire, improvisation, arranging and recording, and regularly engage with a host of local and international musical luminaries who visit our campus for performances, workshops and special events. Recent guests include Sammy J (Aus), Eric Whitacre (UK), Kuniko Kato (Japan), Thomas Meadowcroft (Aus/Germany), Vanessa Tomlinson (Aus), Fritz Hauser (Switzerland), and Nardi Simpson (Aus), as well as special performance projects with organisations Speak Percussion, The Sound Collectors Lab and SensiLab. Monash Percussion Studio was founded in 2021 by Dr Louise Devenish, and brings together undergraduate and postgraduate musicians from Monash University. As well as performing on campus, in 2025 the undergraduates from the Studio have performed at a range of unique events, including Marimbafest! in Western Australia, live on air at 3MBS Radio, and outdoors at the Billilla Gardens, and the PhD percussionists have performed their creative research at Next Wave Festival, RISING, and Canberra International Music Festival.
