Known for his evocative storytelling and raw emotional depth, Smyth’s latest work explores themes of transformation, loss, and renewal, inspired by the cycles of life and the cosmos.
Speaking about the EP, Smyth reflects: "Matches captures the fleeting yet powerful moments
that shape us. Like striking phosphorus on a red tide, it ignites waves of time and burns
courageously, even in the face of the unknown. The fleeting nature of existence mirrors the
collapse of stars—moments of loss cascading out of reach, only to birth new light in unexpected
places."
This release marks the second chapter in Smyth’s larger EP collection, which also includes
Blood. Together, these works delve into the full spectrum of human experience, from
catastrophe to redemption, through a sonic and emotional landscape shaped by Smyth’s
signature voice and artistry.
The vinyl is a unique double EP, featuring the fresh release ‘Matches’ on one side (B) and the
previously released Blood on the other (A). Smyth describes this collection as a meditation on
co-existing with the present while navigating the complexities of life as a musician:
"Opportunities come and go, often feeling like a double-edged sword. The challenge lies in how
we spin and weave these moments into our lives—or sometimes untangle ourselves from them.
Whether creating music or reflecting on life’s deeper questions, time tests our ability to balance
everything we carry."
Smyth’s approach to release dates has always been intentional, aligning his music with
moments of reflection, celebration, and transition. Past releases have coincided with Valentine's
Day, New Year's Eve, and European summers. Now, Matches arrives to close the year,
embracing the spirit of the holidays and the warmth of time spent with loved ones.
With Matches, Smyth continues to be a beacon for those who find solace in the deep, resonant
truths of a song.
There will be 2 remaining chapters in this quartet of EP’s still to come - Blood, Matches,
Fractures and Celebration.
