The simple stick is one of our earliest tools and weapons. As such, it’s attached to our basic movements and mindset.

In this class we will look at Filipino systems of stick fighting - Arnis, Kali and Eskrima - in combination with Western martial arts approaches. We will learn to work with the stick for movement and mind agility in fun exercises. We'll learn first with foam sticks, and progress to rattan.

What will we cover?

In this class we will cover:

An intro to stick fighting (what is it) and it's safety considerations
How to correctly grip a stick
How to manipulate it around your body to increase awareness and provide mobility for your joints
The basic strikes – used for health and for fighting
Partner striking drills that can also help with cognition

This is a total beginners class, suitable for all ages and levels of movement.

Who will be Teaching?

Jim Armstrong (he/him) has been involved in the martial arts, self defence, and the movement industry for almost 4 decades, having started stick fighting in 1987 and competing in the World Championships in Cebu, Philippines, in 1998 and 2000.

Jim runs a full-time training centre in Rowville, and has taught martial arts in many countries around the world, to adults, children, women's classes and more. He still loves playing around with the sticks and the benefits they offer in movement and mind agility.
