Stickybeak Day - Wirrealpa Station
Event description
In 2010 the Fargher family became involved in the Ecosystem Management Understanding (EMU) project to gain a better understanding of Wirrealpa’s natural resources. They mapped the property’s landforms, drainage, vegetation types, productive capacity and areas of cultural, biodiversity and historical significance onto satellite imagery.Â
EMU landscape ecologists undertook on-ground inspections to identify and plan land rehabilitation works, focusing on improving productive land on the property.Â
At a number of sites, banks were installed to intercept, slow and divert surface water flows away from active gully heads and spread water over a wide area to promote plant growth. In various places, small structures and treatments have been used to achieve similar outcomes.Â
Other areas have been contour ripped and pitted to promote vegetation growth. Through the EMU project and accessing Grassroots Grants funding, the Farghers have completed remediation works through the entire Little Balcoracana catchment.
