Join us for an engaging workshop where you'll learn how to create vibrant and lifelike still-life drawings using coloured pencils. This workshop is ideal for artists of all skill levels who are interested in honing their techniques in rendering the intricate textures, colours, and details of everyday objects.

Workshop Highlights

Focus on Fruit, Flowers and Ornaments: Explore the beauty and complexity of natural and decorative objects as you draw fruit, flowers, and ornaments. Each item offers unique textures, colours, and shapes that will help refine your skills.

Photo Reference Materials: Photos to transfer will be provided, but you'll also receive tips on how to arrange and photograph your own still-life setups for future practice.

Expert Guidance on Lighting: Jan will provide a detailed lesson on how to properly light your still-life subjects to enhance their form and bring out the most vibrant colours in your artwork.

Setting Up Your Display: Learn how to effectively arrange your still-life scene to create the perfect composition. Jan will guide you through setting up visually engaging displays that highlight the beauty of your subject matter.

Colour Pencil Techniques: Discover techniques for layering and blending coloured pencils to create depth, texture, and realistic details. Gain confidence in using different pressure levels and applying colour to achieve your desired effects.

Materials List

Your colour pencil collection:

You will need a large range of colours in a professional brand, at least 36, but the more the better! Recommended brands are Sanford Prismacolor or Faber- Castell’s Polychromos or Albrecht Durer varieties; OR: Derwent Coloursoft; and Caran d’Ache Luminance, Pablo or Supracolor. But do avoid any children’s or student’s coloured pencils or you will end up very frustrated with their limited potential.   (Pencils may be water soluble.) If available, also buy a Prismacolor Colourless Blender and a Prismacolor white pencil.

Graphite (lead) Pencil - B or 2; 

Kneadable eraser 

Masking tape

Ruler

Scissors

Sharpener: I recommend the desk type rotary sharpeners. Or better still, a rechargeable electric eraser. Costs for either are anywhere between $25 -$70 but are well worth the expense and will help your pencils last longer. Buy the pencils first and then check that they will fit the holes in the sharpener. Jan will also bring good sharpeners to share.

1 sheet graphite transfer paper. Jan will bring some for $3 per sheet if you don't have one.

Drawing board eg, a Gatorboard, MDF board or similar, (must be smooth). Bring along something to prop up one end of the board so that you can work with the board slanted upwards at a slight angle. If your board is not perfectly smooth, then bring a piece of cardboard to cover it.

New soft bristle brush 2” wide or larger. For brushing away pencil crumbs.

A ‘dud’ photograph or transparency for using under your drawing hand to prevent smudging your work.

Paper:  Hot pressed watercolour paper or Stonehenge paper is recommended. To try a coloured background, you will need Mi Tientes, Pastelmat pastel paper or Canson Velvet pastel paper in a neutral, light to middle tone colour. You will need a couple sheets for the workshop, but make sure they are A4 size or larger.

Optional extras: Battery operated eraser. Pencil extenders.
