Stitch & Subvert: Feminist Badge-Making with Rae Haynes
Event description
Join the artist at Fish Lane Arts Precinct for a vibrant drop-in artist workshop inspired by Rae’s exhibition Subversive Threads (on show until 22nd November). This exhibition reclaims embroidery traditions as acts of resistance, exploring how contemporary textiles art can challenge gendered norms and amplify feminist, queer voices.
In this hands-on session, you’ll transform threads, fabric scraps and leftover materials into bold Feminist Badges, complete with stitched text to make your message loud and proud.
DIY badges have long been a cornerstone of feminist, queer activism as portable statements of identity, solidarity, and protest. Wear yours as a personal declaration, or gift it to someone who needs encouragement and empowerment.
No experience needed, just bring your curiosity and love for making. Let’s stitch, subvert, and celebrate feminist voices together.
This is a free event and will run in proximity to Outer Space x Fish Lane Art Markets, and everyone is welcome to attend, explore, and engage respectfully.
A voluntary donation will be available, with all proceeds supporting Zig Zag, a vital local service for women, trans, non-binary and gender diverse young people aged 12-25 years. Donate here or QR codes will be available on the day.
Proudly presented in partnership between Outer Space and Fish Lane Arts Precinct, working together to support and showcase local artists in Magandjin/Brisbane’s vibrant creative community.
