An estimated one million Tibetan children — roughly 80% of the child population in Tibet — have been forcibly separated from their families and placed into colonial-style boarding schools, drawing tragic parallels to the Stolen Generations in Australia and First Nations peoples in North America.

UN rights experts have condemned this “large-scale assimilation program” as a violation of international human rights standards, stripping Tibetan children of their rights to culture, religion and education.

Dr. Gyal Lo, a Tibetan human rights advocate and educational sociologist, has been instrumental in exposing this system. Born in Amdo, eastern Tibet, Dr. Lo holds a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University for Nationalities in China, where he later taught, and a PhD in Educational Sociology from the University of Toronto. He taught at the Yunnan Normal University Institute for Studies in Education from 2017-2020. His extensive research and fieldwork, including visits to over 50 boarding schools and through his own family experience, document the devastating impacts on Tibetan children and their communities.

Dr. Lo now resides in Canada and travels globally to advocate for human rights in Tibet.
