Are you between 18 and 24 years old? Centre for Stories' exciting Storytelling On Stage program invites young poets to transform their poetry into captivating live performances at The Blue Room Theatre.

Under the guidance of industry professionals Ange Yang and Jake Dennis, you'll learn powerful techniques to bring your words to life, boost your confidence, and truly connect with an audience. No stage experience required – just bring your story and a dash of courage. (We'll help with the rest, promise!)

This program is part of The Spark and is fully funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) and Healthway, making it completely free for participants.

What is the program?

Up to eight individuals will be invited to this program and have their professional performance at The Blue Room Theatre.

The dates of the workshops:

  • Saturday 22 March: Poetry Performance with Jake Dennis
  • Saturday 29 March: Storytelling with Ange Yang
  • Saturday 5 April: Performance Masterclass with Jake Dennis

🎟 Program Ticket: FREE

The Tech Rehearsal/Storytelling Masterclass will be held at The Blue Room Theatre:

  • Thursday 10 April: Rehearsals anytime from 8am to 5pm

Your Final Performance will be held at The Blue Room Theatre:

  • Saturday 12 April: 4pm onwards


Important information to note:

Participants who need extra one-on-one support will be able to consult with the facilitator on an individual basis.

We are particularly interested in diverse voices and perspectives from young people of all backgrounds, including but not limited to those identifying as First Nations, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, LGBTQIA+, living with a disability and/or experiencing financial hardship.

If consent is provided by you, the storytellers, your stories may also be recorded and shared online through Centre for Stories.

About the Facilitators:

Ange Yang is a Malaysian-Australian writer, essayist and storyteller based in Boorloo (Perth). She uses her appetite to explore questions around food and identity. Her writing has been published by SBS, WA Good Food Guide, Broadsheet and Gourmet Traveller. She shares the joys, laughter and chaos that comes with growing up Asian-Australian in performances at Blue Room Theatre, Barefaced Stories and Centre for Stories. Find her @vegemitecongee.

Jake Dennis/Poet of Jazz is a singer, actor, poet, and educator from Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia. A soulful jazz, swing, blues, pop, and soul vocalist, Jake Dennis captivates audiences with heartfelt performances. For over twenty-five years, Jake has performed shows at WA’s best venues incl. DownStairs at His Majesty’s Theatre, Ellington Jazz Club, Universal Bar, Perth Town Hall, and the Don Russell, Kalamunda, Koorliny, Mandurah, and Subiaco Performing Arts Centres. He has appeared on Foxtel, Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour DVD, Backyard Survivor, Access 31, Aurora TV, RTR FM, Telethon, Pirate Radio, Heritage Radio, & Twin Cities Radio. Find him @poetofjazz.
