Event description

Melbourne Bushwalkers invites you to join them on an explore of Stradbroke Park and Hays Paddock, including a stop for lunch in a cafe.  This walk is part of the Try Bushwalking Month, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, the peak body representing 60+ bushwalking clubs across Victoria. 

An amble around Stradbroke Park and Hays Paddock in the green area of Kew followed by lunch at The Bean Thief Café, 773 High Street, Kew.  ** Please note lunch will be around 12 pm before we head back to the cars at Stradbroke Park. DISTANCE:  5 km 

WHO IS THIS WALK FOR?  This walk is suitable for bushwalking beginners with a reasonable level of fitness, as well as more experienced walkers who wish to explore an attractive coastal area. 

CHILDREN AND PETS:  This walk is for adults 18 years and over, and due to the nature of the walk, we ask you to leave dogs and other pets at home.  Please contact the club directly to inquire about service animals, and any family or pet friendly walks.  

AWT GRADE 2 Easy – a couple of minor elevations around the park areas.  AWT Grade information. 

PACE:  Slow-medium.

WALK DESCRIPTION: 

On the 4th Thursday of each month, Melbourne Bushwalkers has a Social Walk which is suitable for retired bushwalkers or for those who prefer to walk less distance in our delightful parks around the inner City and various suburbs of Melbourne with the option of lunch (own expense) at a local café at the end.

We commence our walk around the perimeter of Stradbroke Park making our way across High Street towards Harrison Reserve for morning tea. 

We then cross Glass Street over to Kilby Road to Frater Street making our way to Hays Paddock.  We will skirt around the edge of Glass Creek on the west side to the playground and Wetlands area where we may spot particular birds.  Walk towards the Archery Range moving out of Hays Paddock with a short walk through a residential street in East Kew, heading back to Hays Paddock on the east side to the start back through to High Street with a short walk to The Bean Thief Café for lunch.  After lunch we head back to the carpark at Stradbroke Park.

MEETING POINT:  Meet at 10.30 am at Stradbroke Park, 1369 Burke Road, East Kew (corner Belmore Road – Harp Road) at the back of the football pavilion.
There are 2 car parks with entry points on Burke Road either side of the pavilion.

Mandatory:

  • Backpack
  • Rain jacket
  • Hiking shoes, but runners/sneakers are okay
  • Money
  • Personal first aid kit (your health is your responsibility)
  • Sun hat/sunscreen

Recommended:

  • Morning tea
  • Hiking poles – not necessary, but your regular walking aid if you use them.
