21 October 2024 - featuring: Strange Attractors & Survival of the Fiddes

STRANGE ATTRACTORS (NSW/VIC) - ALBUM LAUNCH

Dylan van der Schyff - drum kit & percussion
Jess Green - guitar & effects

Strange Attractors is a collaboration between drummer Dylan van der Schyff and guitarist Jess Green. This recording documents a series of spontaneous improvisations made over a single session in Melbourne, Australia. The music is exuberant and complex – at times cinematic, at times cheeky and raucous. These are real-time conversations in sound and emotion, evoking free jazz, free improvisation, ambient and drone music, and, occasionally, shades of 90’s grunge rock.

The name Strange Attractors is borrowed from the mathematics of complex systems. It describes the dynamic forces that pull systems in chaos towards coordination, but never in the same way twice. The term Strange Attractor is used in the study of grand complex systems such as planetary orbits, flocking birds, swarming insects, and weather systems. Strange Attractors describes unpredictable pattern formation in nature and therefore provides a delightful metaphor for the free-wheeling constellations of energy in these pieces.

    SURVIVAL OF THE FIDDES

    Andy Fiddes – Trumpet/flugelhorn/cornet
    David Theak – Saxophones
    James Kennedy – Trombone
    TBC – Bass
    James Waples – Drums

Andy Fiddes’ original group ‘Survival of the Fiddes’ returns to the stage! The band will revisit pieces from the record ‘Fear Smile’ and numerous new compositions from the mind of the ever-inventive Fiddes.“When the art of composing, arranging, and improvising meld together, a showcase like this can demonstrate high art. Add a great sense of humour, a relaxed atmosphere, and good sound quality and you’re left with the question “since when was high art such great fun?” – Peter Wockner
