Street Smart 1: Active Travel Training ages 11 - 14 years

This hands-on workshop is for girls aged 11-14 years and is aimed at building confidence in using buses, and walking/biking alone. Every girl receives a free Bee card and parents/whanau receive additional information about how to support their young active traveller. Groups are limited to a maximum of 12 participants and snacks will be provided.

During this short course, participants will learn about:

  • Using the Orbus network and communicating with bus drivers & other passengers
  • Best practice in walking/biking safely (day and night)
  • Making decisions under pressure and how to identify people who can help if something goes wrong
  • Using technology to help keep them safe

Course Facilitators

Amanda Robinson is a registered teacher who has worked with teenagers for more than 20 years, and continues to work in education. She’s also the General Manager of Queenstown-based active travel charity, The Lightfoot Initiative. 

Sensei Pat Quaid is a registered secondary school teacher and owner of the Shukokai Karate dojo in Queenstown.
