Strength of Stories Art Exhibition and Concert
Event description
A very special and unique event combining an art exhibition by artist Jenny Greentree and a concert by singer-songwriter Nerida. Jenny and Nerida are both inspired by the strength and resilience of the outback landscape, reflected also in the people who live in it - and they see a beauty in both. Both artists love to encourage people in good times and harsh times through art, music and humour. This concert is an invitation to take time out from the strains of life, to experience something lovely, encouraging, and uplifting, celebrating the Australian spirit that motivates Jen and Nerida, who have been friends for about 30 years, finding strong connection through their creative outlook on life. Almost two years ago, Nerida was very excited to go to Bourke for a festival, and to stay with Steve and Jenny in their beautiful place on the Darling River at North Bourke. While they were together, they cooked up the idea of a joint exhibition and concert in Bourke! So Nerida built a tour around it, called Strength of Stories.
Nerida's original songs reflect emotional depth, breathing the landscape of rural Australia. A story-teller and connector, her concerts create a space for reflection, humour and fun. Described as “a central west Mary Black”, Nerida greatly enjoyed the chance to find a much larger audience via zoom & Youtube since 2020, which led to her first UK tour in 2023. In 2021, her 5th album, Woven, was released - a collection of Australian-based story songs. She has performed concerts throughout the central west, and in folk clubs and festivals in NSW & Victoria.
Jenny Greentree has been painting professionally for 20 years. Living on the banks of the Darling River, quite literally out the Back O' Bourke, provides continual inspiration for Jen who works in a variety of mediums. Jen's perceptive observation and artistic skill enable her to convey the unique characteristics of the outback landscape in a very realistic manner. She has a familiarity with the bush around her, which goes beyond the superficial to an emotional and spiritual connection. Although Jen is most noted for her pastel artworks, the “Strength of Stories" exhibition is a totally new expression of the outback, its wildflowers and its people presented on linen using mixed media. Jen has developed creative pictorial designs using acrylic paint, ink, text and soils of the district. Just as Nerida’s songs offer strength through stories, these artworks also reflect the cultural heart of Australia, the hardship and suffering coexisting with excitement, opportunity and beauty. These paintings are a very personal interpretation of the landscape offering hope, joy and resilience.
