Event description

Gasworks Recording Studio is offering a 4-week studio recording course.
Participants will be given practical and theoretical skills to tackle their own recording projects, with the confidence to get good results whether they’re working at Abbey Road or a bedroom studio.

Participants will be taught using industry-standard equipment in a world-class studio environment, with guidance from industry experts. Each session combines instruction with practical experience and ample time for questions.

Studio Recording 101 is suitable for beginners or those with limited experience in a studio environment.

This course will cover: 

  • Fundamentals of multitrack recording 

  • Working with musicians 

  • Audio signal flow

  • Microphone techniques 

  • Basic mixing 

  • Studio etiquette 

The course will be held over four consecutive Saturdays from 10am - 2pm, beginning on the 5th of July.

Course Structure:

Week 1 - Saturday 5th July
A studio orientation and an introduction to practical skills, including recording with Pro Tools and microphone types and their applications. Basic theoretical concepts covered will be microphone technology, signal flow, acoustics, and digital recording.

Week 2 - Saturday 12th July
Building on the practical skills taught in Week 1, this week introduces concepts including stereo recording techniques, sound propagation, and how to harness different acoustic environments will be covered.

Week 3 - Saturday 19th July
A focus on hands-on recording practice with a session musician, building on theoretical skills learned in previous weeks. This session will involve critically judging musical performances, assessing the merits of different microphone choices, and providing a headphone balance for a session musician.

Week 4 - Saturday 26th July
Students will be involved in a more complex multitrack recording session with a session musician, utilising all the skills learned in previous weeks. During the session, you will be introduced to basic mixing and editing in Pro Tools.

Studio Recording 101 is designed and delivered by the recording engineers and owners of Gasworks Recording Studio who also have extensive university teaching experience. With a wealth of knowledge including mixing, live recording, mastering, and product knowledge, you will have a first hand opportunity to pick their brains. 

Please note the full price of the workshop is $600, which can be paid in full or with the option of two payments. If you wish to secure a spot and split the course payment, a $100 non-refundable deposit is required to register, with the remaining $500 to be paid a minimum of 7 days before the first workshop.
