2024 STUFFit Crew Intensive

Event description

Are you aged 14-19 and keen to pursue a career in the events or screen industries? The STUFFit Crew Intensive weekend is an excellent introduction to both of these industries, and a chance for you to gain hands-on experience with industry professionals.

Every year, STUFFit Student Film Festival accepts film entries from high school students around the world. At our core, we’re a film festival run by high school students, for high school students and we’ve been running for 13 years strong, but now we’re expanding to offer training and education options for those interested in the creative industries. This year, we’re running our Crew Intensive program alongside our Screening Event, enabling young talent to gain hands-on experience and a taste of what STUFFit can offer. We'll be working with industry professionals from QuEvents to facilitate and produce the event from a technical perspective.

Across 2 days in the September school holidays, you’ll form the STUFFit Screening Crew and learn how to run a live screening event. STUFFit transforms the Black Box Theatre in Nambour to bring the life of film to, you guessed it, a black box. We work as a team with many moving pieces and lots of collaboration involved, however you’ll find your place in either the tech, hospitality, or management departments.

  • Tech team: the tech team is responsible for making the magic happen behind the scenes - quite literally lights, camera, action. As a group, you’ll be responsible for setting cameras to capture every moment of the event, controlling the venue lighting to create an immersive atmosphere, setting microphones and controlling audio levels so our films and presenters can be heard in the room and online, and managing the live broadcast of the event. You’re the backbone of the event, and while you’ll be moving around and operating in the shadows, your efforts never go unnoticed.
  • Hospitality heroes: our hospitality heroes are the first STUFFit students our guests see upon arrival. With a friendly smile, you’re responsible for greeting our guests and scanning in pre-purchased tickets, selling tickets on the day, operating our food and drink sales, and doing anything else required to make our guests feel comfortable. As the face of the event, an open and welcoming attitude is vital for this role.
  • Management masters: as a management master, you’re working to keep everyone and everything organised and on schedule - without you, the show can’t go on. Your key duties as a team include stepping into the spotlight to introduce each category of films, welcoming presenters and winners to the stage, ushering guests to their seats, along with dressing and setting the room with seats and signage in preparation for the event. If you have an eye for attention to detail and love a solid run sheet, this is the role for you.
  • Fantastic photographer: behind-the-scene capture of our events is crucial, as it allows us to promote and highlight our events along with sharing our success with sponsors and supporters. You’ll get to work alongside a professional photographer and further develop your skills as an event photographer. *note, this role is only open for 1 student. BYO camera, and established photography skills are required.

We’ll spend Saturday exploring the logistics of how and why STUFFit operates, and setting up the venue to simulate our Screening event. By the end of the day, you will have worked as a team to transform the Black Box Theatre into a sight to be seen - and why waste this opportunity? On Saturday evening, STUFFit is hosting a FREE family movie night for your families - this is your chance to practice everything you’ve learnt throughout the day, in front of an audience you’re comfortable with. Sunday will be a more relaxed day, debriefing and refining how we work together. We’ll also outline and confirm our plans for the Screening event the next weekend.

1 week later on October 5th, your newly-developed skills will be put into full swing as we present our 13th annual STUFFit Student Film Festival Screening event to the world. We welcome students, teachers, industry experts, sponsors, and supporters from South East Queensland in-person at the Black Box Theatre, while live-streaming the event to our friends in other parts of Australia and all over the world. This is an exhilarating day, but it’s your chance to show the world what we’ve taught you! At the end of the event, you’ll walk away with a new-found level of confidence and skills, ready to conquer the events and screen industries.

While we’d love to have everyone onboard, this year the STUFFit Crew Intensive is only open to 15 students, aged 14-19, so be quick to register. Closer to the event, we'll be in touch to confirm preferences regarding what department you'd like to work in. It’s important you understand that by securing a spot in the Crew Intensive program (Sept 28 & 29th), you’re making a commitment to STUFFit and the rest of your crew members to return and run the Screening Event on October 5th. If this is a commitment you know you won’t be able to uphold, we kindly ask that rather than booking in, you leave that spot open for another student, as we are only able to accept a limited number of students.

If you have any questions / queries / concerns, let us know via email - hello@stuffitfilmfestival.com.

Registrations close at 3pm on Friday 6th September.

We look forward to having you onboard as a part of our STUFFit Screening Crew for 2024!
