Event description

Sub-Merge, returns with a new performance space and new vigour.

A delicious, energised space for new work, experimental performance, sound, screen and visual media, Sub-Merge aims to elevate fresh and bold works.

This inaugural Sub-Merge will feature legendary ‘post everything’ music artist Mike Cooper (UK), and a stellar cast of local artists, Tegan Koster Project, Gumlu, Rebecca Youdell, File_Error and Wendy Mocke.

Sub-Merge was developed as a program for new works in the late 2000’s, and was produced in the disused warehouse formerly out the back of Billies Coffee in Cairns.

For the past 40 years Mike Cooper has been an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations.

Described as “The icon of post-everything music” (Lawrence English), his recent work continues to push music and improvisation boundaries.

“Really can’t think of many other 80 year old guitarists whose music still feels somehow relevant thru it’s sheer, expressive abstraction nowadays." (Boomkat)

Tegan Koster Project will present ‘Shapes’, a collaborative project led by synth pop artist Tegan Koster. ‘Shapes’ is a recent recipient of a RADF grant fund, and Tegan will present a ‘work in progress’ showing of her project.

Rebecca Youdell is a performance and media artist with a long background in installation and collaborative new media and performance as part of the group Bonemap. With a strong traditional dance background, Rebecca occupies space with considered and obtuse movement and fascinates with her unique performance approach.

Wendy Mocke is a theatre maker, writer and actress that has pushed traditional theatre frames, and positioned herself as a significant emerging National writing talent. With her work, ‘Meri’, Wendy documented the diverse stories of PNG women through image and sound. This installation will extend the Meri project,  and re-set the work in a contemporary bold new setting.

Gumlu (John DeSatge) realises provocative performance and media works that challenge the news cycle, stereotypes and colonial perspectives in bold, cheeky and insightful vignettes.

File_Error is a sound/media based practitioner that dissolves sound, noise and new media in a live, responsive manner, using objects, electronics and screen media.
