Dulcie

Scattered across the outskirts of Western Australia, four young girls discovered their fathomless passion for music. Ashleigh Carr-White, Timieka Denton, Saskia Brittain and Madison Hanley didn’t all know each other then, but it was only a matter of time before the inexplicable forces of the universe would have them cross paths. There’s no denying that fate brought Dulcie together.

“We all grew up outside of the city and around nature.” - Madison

In a house tucked away in the Perth Hills, Dulcie drummer Madison first picked up the sticks when she turned eight. Bass player and vocalist, Timieka, and guitarist and vocalist, Saskia, both spent their formative years in the serene coastal town of Denmark. Coming from a musical family, experimenting with harmonies and instruments was a rite of passage for Saskia. For Timieka, music was a welcome distraction:

“When you’re growing up on a farm, there’s nothing much else to do. You get bored and pick stuff up.” The group’s keyboardist and vocalist, Ashleigh, lived in the pretty port town of Dampier and was taught piano by her mother. It wasn’t too long before their worlds collided. In fact, Saskia and Timieka became friends when they were just toddlers, while Madison and Ashleigh first met during their high school years. However, it was at the reputable WAAPA in 2018 that the stars completely aligned, and the melodious, smooth sound of Dulcie was born.

“We all come from totally different creative directions.” - Timieka

Between impromptu jam sessions at Saskia’s place and WAAPA’s studio rooms, the girls tried tirelessly to define their indie pop-inspired style. Instead, they arrived at the conclusion that their soaring hooks and inventive melodies simply could not be confined to the limits of one genre. Dulcie’s sound is an amalgamation of their individual musical influences. “One of us will be like, ‘How good is Phoebe Bridgers?’ and someone else will say, ‘Have you heard the new Arctic Monkeys album?’” Madison says. Of course, Dulcie isn’t just defying normality in terms of genre. Refusing to accept that there can only be one lead singer, they interchange between three vocalists, which makes their sound even more distinctive. But this rebellion has proved advantageous for Dulcie. Their idiosyncratic style immediately turned heads at triple j, and Ocean Alley dubbed their soulful debut single “Fall” their favourite track of 2019. Whether it’s supporting G Flip, playing Groovin the Moo Bunbury or touring with Polish Club, Dulcie’s electric presence cannot be denied.

“We like summery colours and that Woodstock kind of vibe.” - Ashleigh

The band’s effortlessly cool energy and quirkiness is amplified at their live gigs. Usually spotted wearing vintage pink overalls or bright retro tops, it’s easy to forget you’re not stuck in some kind of ‘70s time loop. This profound sense of nostalgia is also reflected in their name. Derived from the Latin word ‘dulcis’, which means ‘sweet’, Dulcie is named after Ashleigh’s great-grandmother, who was also a talented singer.

“I signed my guitar when I was about five.” - Saskia ‘

Sweet’ is definitely one way to describe the members of Dulcie, but they are also eager to leave their mark on the Australian music scene. “I remember when I was younger, I signed my guitar when I was about five,” Saskia says. There’s no doubt that these girls can afford to dream that big. After all, at the rate Dulcie is going, their signatures will all be worth something one day.

Adrian Dvzuke

The buzz continues to grow for Adrian Dzvuke (pronounced Zu-Kay).

The Perth-based artist has quickly become one of Australia's most in-demand emerging acts, as shown by performances at Splendour In The Grass, Groovin The Moo and Wave Rock festivals, as well as support slots for Spacey Jane, Omah Lay, POND, San Cisco, Stella Donnelly & Winston Surfshirt.

Equally at home onstage with his band or in the studio, his soulful mixture of Afrobeats, R&B and Pop has been gaining fans at every show and with every release.

Born in Zimbabwe, Adrian moved to Australia aged 12 where - in the finest R&B tradition - he began his music career singing and playing drums in church. Fast forward some years and Adrian’s recent Julia Stone collaboration ‘Fiyah’ and 2021 debut EP ‘Phone Me When You Lonely’ have seen him featured by Triple J, MTV, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon & VEVO, amassing over 2 million streams.

These milestones have helped shape a massive year for Adrian, culminating in sold out headline shows, multiple awards and international Top 100 Chart positions on iTunes, Apple Music & Spotify.

Catch Adrian while you can.

The Little Lord St Band

They’ve taken out ‘Album and Group of the year 2021’ at Boyup Brook Country Music awards, who are they? Western Australia’s country favourites The Little Lord Street Band, were crowned Best Country Act three years straight at the West Australian Music Industry awards on the strength of their dynamic live show, and music roster with debut album ‘A Minute of Another Day’ and three acclaimed EP releases. Including winning the WAM Song of the Year (Country) ‘Maybe I’m Just In Love’. Of recent TLLSB blasted the first single ‘High Beams’ off its sophomore album, added to Double J, RTRfm and ABC Country radio across Australia.

A little bit of country, little bit of folk and rock this band has played hundreds of stages, equally comfortable and charming set up in the corner of a country pub or playing touring support – including highlights Gomez (UK), Justin Townes Earle (USA), The Whitlam’s (NSW) Fanny Lumsden (NSW), Ruby Boots (USA via WA) and Daniel Champagne (NSW) and soon to add, The Living End (VIC) in early 2023.

The Little Lord Street Band has surprised us, entering their eighth year they’ve put the runs on the board and are proven festival favourites at Bigsound (QLD), Out on the Weekend (VIC), St Kilda Festival (VIC), In The Pines, Fairbridge, Nukara, Nannup, Perth Festival and Fringe Festivals in Western Australia.

Legends amongst the WA band circuit, with their unique blend of the indie-laden country pushing them forward as a band that works for both traditional country audiences and something more forward-thinking and alternative. As a result, they're amongst WA's formidable bands.

Fronted by Natasha Shanks and James Rogers and joined by Alex Megaw, Michael Savage and Jon Fernandes, this 5 piece outfit blends the somewhat comically awkward stage banter in with the beautifully crafted and catchy hooks and melodies, sure to make it home with you, into cars, kids playlists and backyard shindigs.

King Ibis

Perth indie-pop/rock band King Ibis makes music that feels distinctively Western Australian while also being unlike anything you’ve heard before. Their sun-bleached, stripped-down rhythms combine with soaring vocals and a cheeky sense of humour to create irresistibly catchy songs.

King Ibis fuses the potent, personal lyrics of lead singer/songwriter Nadene Burchell to the slick instrumental work of guitarist Matthew Oakley, bassist Samantha Goddard and drummer John McAndrew, crafting endlessly-replayable earworms that deliver deeply personal stories in a stylish pop package. Fun, heartfelt and a little bit quirky, this young foursome might just be your new favourite band.
