‘I'll find a day to massacre them all, the cruel father and his traitorous sons, and make them know what 'tis to let a queen kneel in the streets and beg for grace in vain.’
400 years on from when it was written, Titus Andronicus still remains one of the bloodiest plays ever staged; possessing a power to shock that has seldom dwindled in the years since. A wretched tale of revenge set amidst a crumbling Roman empire, it tells the story of Tamora, Queen of the Goths, and Titus Andronicus, the Roman general who murdered her eldest son.
With the setting and context shifted to the final days of humanity, SUDS Presents: The Lamentable Tragedy of Titus Andronicus shines the spotlight on some of the characters less prominent in Shakespeare’s original work, and attempts to re-shape it into a timely tale about the victims of imperialism. As a multi-generational story of lineage, trauma and the sins of the father, this is a play that speaks to our generation's fears of inheriting a world that is irrevocably broken. To the cast and crew of this production, Titus Andronicus is a warning.
