SULLA LINGUA (IT/AU) + BRUCE RUSSELL (NZ)
Event description
Sulla Lingua is the world’s only Australian-Italian electroacoustic noise rock trio, featuring Anthony Pateras (tētēma/PIVIXKI) on electronics, Stefano Pilia (Zu, Rokia Traoré, Massimo Volume) on guitar and Riccardo La Foresta on drums and his own creation, the Drummophone.
Anthony Pateras is internationally renowned pianist and electronic instrumentalist. He has played and recorded albums with numerous international heavyweights including Mike Patton (Faith No More), John Zorn (Tzadik), Stephen O’Malley (SunnO)))), Fennesz, Oren Ambarchi among many others, and has appeared on labels such as Mego/Editions Mego, Tzadik, Ipecac, Southern Lord.
Here, sharing an impeccable pedigree in their electroacoustic rock trio SULLA LINGUA, Anthony appears here alongside Italian guitarist Stefano Pilia who has recorded and released albums with David Grubbs (Gastr Del Sol), Z’EV and John Duncan among many others, and joined by renowned sound artist and percussionist Riccardo LaForesta who is 2021 alumni of Shape Festival and has presented and played at the world biggest contemporary music festivals including Unsound, Sonica and Café Oto among others.
Sulla Lingua in Italian means ‘on the tongue’ or ‘on language’, which summarises the band’s high/lo aesthetics – they could be referring to Roland Barthes or saluting Gene Simmons, but they still haven’t decided. Both seem fitting to their trance-y harmonics and heavy grooves mixed with psychoacoustic electronics and cinematic textures.
Bruce Russell is a founding member of New Zealand noise rock legends DEAD C, as well as A Handful of Dust. He has recorded and played with international legends such as Birchville Cat Motel (Lee Ranaldo), Tetuzi Akayama, Toshimaru Nakamura, Eddie Prevost (AMM), Alan Courtis (Reynols), Jason Kahn (Leaving Trains), Lasse Marhaug (Jazkamer) and John Wiese (Bastard Noise). He has releases out through international labels Siltbreeze, Feeding Tube Records, Chocolate Monk, Smalltown Supersound, Carbon Records, Ecstatic Yod as well as his own legendary Corpus Hermeticum label among others.
