Due to popular demand....he is back!

Stephen Carroll is an expert in Japanese & Chinese brush painting.

He will guide you through the brush strokes that harmonise your painting, mind and body. You, the ink and brush work as one.

Sumi-e is a centuries old art form originally dating from China. In its fundamental quality it is not a representational art but one of “essences ”. In this approach no brush stroke is to be taken without first having an understanding of what one is painting. The artists strives to capture the essence of the subject with minimal strokes and only black ink. Nothing extraneous must be in the composition, which will only distract from the subject. Sumi-e is the art of meditation and contemplation brought to bear upon a subject to be rendered in a painting.

All sumi painters begin with practising “The Four Gentleman" and return to these regularly. These compositions of bamboo, plum, orchid and chrysanthemum contain all the brush stokes needed to paint anything in the world or your imagination.

This class is suitable for all levels of skill from beginners to accomplished artists.

This will be a hands on/practical class that will allow you to begin to see your own style in this ancient art form.
