Suminagashi - Japanese Marbling on Paper
Event description
Suminagashi, which means "floating ink," originated in Japan around the 12th century. The deceptively simple artform involves laying ink on a water bath, gently blowing on it or manipulating it, and then capturing it on paper or fabric.
We'll explore the basic tools and materials and then play around with the technique on paper to see how subtle changes alter our results. The process is meditative, so this is a wonderful way to unwind! The papers make lovely additions to cards and collages, as well as frames for pictures and wrapping paper. All materials are included. We will focus on a traditional black sumi-e ink, but can try out some more modern acrylic inks if time and interest permit.
Suminagashi is generally not a messy process, but accidents do happen and the ink is permanent. Wear an apron or dress accordingly!
This class is intended for participants ages 15+ as it tends to be a slower process than other forms of marbling. A patient teen 13+ may enjoy the experience as well. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A WAIVER ON FILE. We will have hard copies available on site. Please also refer to our parking and accessibility information.
