The sun. Oh, the sun!!
The feeling of winter sun on bare skin in the middle of the day.
The fiery explosion of first light over the water in the early morning.
The majestic pinks of an autumn sunset over the mountains.
The way the sun turns the trees to gold.
The diamonds that appear on every single needle of the She Oak after the rain.
Oh, the sun!

For eons, our ancestors have worshipped great Surya.
Without the sun—the great luminary—there is no life.

It is Surya who ripens the oranges and encourages the Calendula flowers out of their tight buds in spring. We are most alive when we rise with the sun and sleep when she goes down.

Sun is life.

An integral part of yoga practice is Surya Namaskāra — Salute to the Sun.

These movements are devotional. The postures that flow together with breath, like dew droplets connected on a spider web, move the sacred river of the spine — your spine — forward and backward, creating a pulsation. This pulsation strengthens and mobilises the spine and the supporting muscles around it.

The spine is life.
The spine is your connection between earth and sky — your connection to the stars above, your ancestors.

When you have a daily spinal movement practice, this connection is being cleaned and nourished regularly. Sun Salutations are a shower for your spine. They are also a ritual of gratitude.

Starting your day with Sun Salutations is to start your day with gratitude, devotion, and reverence for life.


In this two-and-a-half-hour workshop, I will guide you through the foundations of Sun Salutations and clearly teach modifications for shoulders, wrist, and knee issues. I will explain the mechanics of the physical asanas included in Sun Salutations, including:

  • Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

  • Uttanasana (Forward Fold)

  • Ardha Uttanasana (Halfway Lift)

  • Dandasana (Plank)

  • Chaturanga Dandasana

  • Bhujangasana (Cobra)

  • Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward Facing Dog)

  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog)

  • All transitions: jump backs, jump forwards, step backs, and step forwards

  • Ujjayi breath

  • Surya Namaskāra A, B & Jivamukti Salute

I will also teach you the mythology behind Surya Namaskāra and a simple mantra to bring into your practice.
