Event description

Sunday Concert Series: Paul McLaney
Sunday 21 April, 6pm
Tickets: $35 / $25 (concession)

In its ongoing commitment to support and provide opportunities for live performance, The Arts House Trust is proud to present the Sunday Concert Series 2024 - an eclectic array of musicians and musical genres showcasing local performers.

You would be hard-pressed to find a musician with a more diverse recorded output than Paul McLaney. In a career spanning over 20 years, the musician has released a remarkable body of work under various guises. Added to this are his collaborations with Anika Moa, SJD, Breaks Co-op, Julia Deans, Concord Dawn, Counterstrike, Fly My Pretties, Jeff Boyle (Jakob), Proteins of Magic, Magik Johnson, Eden Mulholland, Rhian Sheehan, Maisey Rika and the list goes on...

He’s lost track of how many albums are actually out there, but it's somewhere around the 30 mark. The unifying feature of all his work is that singular voice. “I’ve had everything from Bowie, Bryan Ferry, John Martyn, Chris Isaak, Scott Walker... my only thing about singing is conveying the emotion and doing it in tune...”

At the heart of it all though is the acoustic guitar. “No matter where the song ends up, that's generally where they start; on the guitar. One guitar in particular, one I’ve had since I was 16. I’d say 90% of the songs I’ve written have originated from that instrument.”

Paul McLaney joins us as part of his national tour this April.

ABOUT THE PERFORMER

Paul McLaney has performed across many genres from acoustic finger-style guitar and lush string arrangements of his solo work ‘EDIN’ ‘Diamond Side’; to the ambient and experimental electronica of The Impending Adorations; prog-rock homage (Immram); the piano excursions of ‘The Old Traditions’ with Raashi Malik (“a highlight”); the Te Reo song settings of Shakespeare and an ever-expanding body of composition for theatre and dance – over 30 productions to date.

Born and bred in Auckland, Denise Norton became a student member of the Royal Academy of Dance, under the tuition of the well known Director/Choreographer Rhonda Daverne.

At 11 years of age, Denise won her first talent show in Oakura and at 13 became a private pupil of Dame Sister Mary Leo, receiving a scholarship in 1976. This led to extensive singing training, and although she participated in: Marriage of Figaro, The Bartered Bride, La Traviata and the TV programme Stars on Sunday, variety was the key for Denise, which led to a cameo role with Tommy Lee Jones as a fierce spear wielding warrior in the film Savage Islands.

This led to a European Tour of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar', an engagement for 18 months as an original cast member of ‘CATS’ in Hamburg, and the chance to perform on Germany’s most luxurious cruise liner MS Europa, after which she landed in NYC to stay for a year and perform in Jazz clubs. Returning to Berlin, Denise performed at the iconic Theatre des Westens in Sweet Charity and the UFA revue, which travelled to the JFK center in Washington D.C.
