Sunday Jazz Salon is a new boutique live music experience held in the Steinway Gallery Melbourne. Situated in one of Armadale’s most prestigious streets, this new gallery stands as the finest representation of Steinway & Sons pianos in Australia and features a beautiful performance space set with a magnificent Steinway grand piano on centre stage.

The acoustics in this unique gallery space is perfectly suited for this intimate jazz concert Sunday August 27.

Featuring three of Melbourne’s finest jazz musicians, Chelsea Wilson- vocals, Alexander Nettelbeck – piano, Tamara Murphy - double bass the ensemble will perform a selection of classic and contemporary jazz music from Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Gregory Porter and more.

About the performers:

Chelsea Wilson, vocals
Chelsea is a Melbourne based vocalist, songwriter, broadcaster and producer. Her debut album “I Hope You’ll Be Very Unhappy Without Me” was lauded #2 Album of the Year on ABC Radio National and nominated for Best Soul Album at The Age Music Victoria Awards. An internationally acclaimed live performer she headlined the Arts Centre Melbourne stage at the Australasian World Music Expo; and made her UK debut at Glastonbury Festival 2015, subsequently selling out the famous London Jazz Café. Her second album "Chasing Gold" was nominated for the Australian Music Prize. Chelsea has performed in Paris, London, Tokyo, Dubai, Miami, Seminyak and across Australia. She has worked with artists such as Paul Grabowsky and supported acts such as Macy Gray, Renee Geyer, Tina Arena and Neneh Cherry.

Behind the scenes, Chelsea is a festival producer and has directed festivals such as Stonnington Jazz and Brunswick music Festival. She was the Artistic Associate of Melbourne International Jazz Festival Congress 2021 and a Board Director of Music Victoria for five years. As a guest speaker Chelsea has appeared at music industry conferences such as NYC Jazz Congress USA and Bigsound and is a guest lecturer at Melbourne University and Monash University. The former Music Manager of iconic Melbourne radio station PBS 106.7FM she has presented radio programs for PBS, Mi-Soul Radio UK, triple j and Delite Radio London and produces the Control Podcast. Currently she is the Senior Producer of Contemporary Music at Monash University Performing Arts Centres and Artistic Director of the Women of Soul Collective. She was recently nominated for the Creative Leadership Award, Australian Women in Music Awards.

Alexander Nettelbeck, piano
Alexander Nettelbeck is a Melbourne-based musician whose playing encompasses classical, jazz, and contemporary music. With an impressive list of musical associations ranging from Kate Ceberano to Marcia Hines, Vivian Sessoms (USA), and baroque violinist Davide Monti. He has performed extensively both at home and overseas with his own groups the Alexander Nettelbeck Trio and The New Impromptu Quartet including at Melbourne Recital Centre, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, St Kilda Festival, Tuscia In Jazz, Italy and Piwinica Pod Baranami Jazz Festival, Poland ,and for events and festivals in the UK, France, Germany, Portugal, Japan and New Zealand. His compositions have featured in theatre, radio, film and television including ABC and SBS with distribution by MGM Australia.

Tamara Murphy, bass

Tamara Murphy, bassist/composer/educator is based in Melbourne, Australia with over 20 years’ experience as a band leader and in-demand session player.

She has released 10 albums as leader (or co-leader) and appears on over 30 recordings by other artists. She’s toured all around the world, performing in Japan, China, Europe, the UK and New York as well as Australia. Currently, Tamara Murphy performs with Kate Miller-Heidke, Ali McGregor, Harry Angus, Clio Renner, Andrea Keller, Nat Bartsch, Paul Grabowsky and Stephen Magnusson and many more artists in addition to her own band, Spirograph Studies.

She ran her quintet Murphy’s Law for 14 years, releasing four albums and was a member of Keller-Murphy-Browne (with Andrea Keller and Allan Browne), releasing two albums. She also performs and composes for other projects. Her albums have been nominated for The Age Genre Music Awards, AIR awards and The Bell Awards.

Murphy was awarded the inaugural PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission in 2011 and her compositions have appeared on albums by other artists, including vocalist Elly Hoyt, ATM15 Big Band, pianist Tony Gould and saxophonist Rob Burke. In the last few years, she has worked as a musical director and arranger for the Brunswick Music Festival and Monash University’s MLIVE Progress Festival. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the National Live Music Awards (Best Jazz Act).

In 2019 her band, Spirograph Studies, toured around Australia and New Zealand to support the release of their debut album, Kindness Not Courtesy (shortlisted for a Music Vic Award). Their second album Lowlights was released in October 2021.

In the lockdown of 2020, Tamara Murphy started an interview series entitled ‘Flipped Interviews’. This fun series of interviews features male musicians being asked questions previously given to female musicians. It’s a cheeky, yet inclusive way to highlight the different ways men and women are treated in our industry. Previous interviewees include Paul Grabowsky, Harry James Angus and Scott Tinker.
