Sunday School of Rock presents Sticky Carpet
Description
STICKY CARPET
Sunday 8 NOVEMBER at Henkel Street Cinema brings you STICKY CARPET, the final offering in this year’s Sunday School of Rock series of music documentaries at the Henkel Street Cinema.
This is an extremely rare opportunity to witness a document of the Melbourne live music scene of 20 years ago. The documentary epitomizes the guerilla DIY ethos of the time. It was made by a passionate music enthusiast in the form of Mark Butcher with a couple of high end (for the time) Cannon cameras loaned to him.
“This raw and vital filmed souvenir interviews the musicians around in 2006, Melbourne sonic explorers such as Robin Fox and Rod Cooper, and scene stalwarts including Ross Knight (Cosmic Psychos), Bruce Milne (founder of Au-Go-Go Records, In-Fidelity Records) and Roland S. Howard (Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party). A veritable roll call of live performance footage comes from the likes of The Dirty Three, The Stabs, Bored!, I Spit on your Gravy, The Sailors, Love of Diagrams, Pisschrist and MUCH more.”
This bit of text was lifted from the 2006 Melbourne International Film Festival program and now exists on IMDb as one of the sole records of a film that screened a handful of times and then disappeared. There’s no trailer that’s findable on YouTube or elsewhere – hence the short clip of Rowland S Howard and Brian Hooper at The Tote in 2006 as a sniff of the vibe of Sticky Carpet. The film has no distributor. I arranged to meet Mark at a pub in Brunswick and he handed me the DVD of the film. This meeting and this film represent some of the best things about Sunday School of Rock. It’s intimate. It’s personal. It’s about a direct connection to the music, the makers and the community.
Unfortunately Mark will be in Japan on the 8th otherwise he definitely would have been there to talk about the film. For the final SSOR of the year I’ll be doing a give away of a copy of the DVD and I’ll also mention a few things about Mark and what he’s working on at the moment.
There’ll be drinks and discussion after the doco at Foreigner Brewing Co next door after the film.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
