Lighting Design 101 with Jason Ng
ABOUT THE WORKSHOPÂ
In this workshop you will gain an insight into the beautiful universe of lighting design. Learn about the skills, scope and approaches involved in lighting for theatre, as well as a simple guide to putting up your first design. This workshop welcomes fresh beginners in theatre-making, co-creatives in theatre who would like to build stronger collaborations with their lighting designers, or non-theatre folk who might want to gain a deeper appreciation for theatre.Â

The workshop will cover:Â
- What are the skills needed in lighting design
- What is the scope of work that a lighting designer is involved in
- How to approach the designing of lights for theatre

ABOUT THE COACH
Jason is a multi-faceted theatre maker with a wide spectrum of experience, working on shows that ranged from international arts festivals to non-profit youth productions, often simultaneously. His portfolio benefits from his critical eye for semiotics, creative energy for problem-solving, and passion for collaborating with other artists.Â
His dynamism and drive, coupled with his background as a teacher, has brought him opportunities in multiple roles, from production and stage management, to lighting and set design, as well as mentoring and consulting.
He graduated from the Theatre Studies Programme at the National University of Singapore in 2006. After spending time in events management and education, Jason returned to theatre in 2013. He moved to Perth in 2017 where he studied Lighting at WAAPA, before moving to Melbourne in 2020.
Australian credits include Jiangshi and Cephalopod with Squid Vicious, Bad Baby Jean with The Last Great Hunt, Coming Out with Lucy Holz, Lenore with The Knack Theatre, Dear Mama with Wit Incorporated, Flake and Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf with Red Stitch Actors' Theatre.
