The next ACRS Sunshine Coast Sub-Chapter seminar will be held at the University of the Sunshine Coast Sippy Downs campus, room E.2.25 on Tuesday the 2nd of April, with a 9:30am start in person and 10:00am start over zoom. Prof Paul Salmon from the Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast will be presenting the finding of his research on the Cyclist Reporting of Incidents Tool (CRIT) 12-month trial.

The CRIT app provides cyclists with a simple and quick way of reporting their crashes and near miss incidents, including information regarding the incidents themselves (e.g., time and location, severity, incident description) and the contributory factors involved. This presentation will provide an overview of the app and the findings from an initial 12-month trial involving 347 cyclists. Based on an analysis of 135 cycling incidents (22 crashes, 113 near miss incidents), cyclists frequently reported contributory factors relating to road users (e.g., cyclist and driver behaviour), and equipment, environment, and surroundings (e.g., road and cyclist infrastructure). Distal transport system factors were also reported (e.g., infrastructure maintenance and repairs, social media, and driver education and training). Finally, commonalities in the contributory factors reported for crashes and near miss incidents were identified, suggesting that near misses a critical source of information for crash prevention. The presentation will close with a summary of the implications for road safety research and practice.
