50th Anniversary of Sunstone!

Between 1973 and 1976 I organised a series of Hippie concerts called the Sunstone Shows (initially entitled the Sunstone Super Concert & Back To Earth Fair), beginning my involvement in the music scene and community arts. The first series was staged at the Crafers Hall next door to Tree and Leaf vegetarian restaurant. Outgrowing the small hall it was moved to Burnside the next year.

RODNEY FREEMAN SMITH and NICOLAS LYON were two of the musicians who performed at my Sunstone Shows in 1973 and they will be performing at my 50th anniversary Sunstone Show on Saturday 9th December at The Coolroom @ the Northern Arts Hotel in Castlemaine.

Also on the bill are award-winning singer-songwriter, KAVISHA MAZZELLA and First Nations songwoman,TRUDY FATNOWNA EDGELEY, GLENN SKUTHORPE and NOEL BEARE.

KAVISHA MAZZELLA
ARIA award winner, songbird, choir director and folkloric explorer, KAVISHA's original song's lyrical ingredients include humour, poetry, social justice and the spiritual. Combine this prowess with the voice of an angel and you have the experience of a Kavisha concert. Singing in English, Italian and other languages, she will take you on an uplifting journey of well-crafted stories and songs, ringing with echoes of Celtic, Fado and Gypsy influences that will strike a resounding chord within. She is currently director of the Lingua Madre Italian Folk Choir in Melbourne.

This unique lineage and love for country gives her a deep cultural platform to share stories through art, music, and theatre.Trudy's haunting vocals, melodies, tropical tempos & tribal beats reflects not only her influences and passion for her music, but also her desire to tell the stories of her rich ancestry from the canefields of Far North Queensland to the shores of Jamaica. RODNEY FREEMAN SMITH
and Men At Work’s Colin Hay had a band in the mid-1970s called Solid Sailing, which also included actor-musician, Kym Gyngell. The band played at the iconic Sunbury Pop/Rock Festivals 1972 - 1975. Rod also played Sunbury with actor-singer, Jane Clifton and Janie Conway (Myriad). In 1984 Rod & Kym released the album, Cinema Qua with their band, Le Club Foote, releasing two singles, ‘Party’ and ‘Warning’. The group supported the illustrious international acts, Elvis Costello, U2, Joe Jackson and Men At Work.
I first met Rodney 50 years ago when putting on the Sunstone hippie extravaganzas in the Adelaide hills, which featured Rod with Leon “Moses” Carmen in Green Warriors. Like many of the musicians who played Sunstone, Rod soon moved on to Melbourne, where bands like Mondo Rock, Sports, Brodrick Smith’s Big Combo and Stars absorbed the Adelaide players. Rod sadly declined the offer to join the fledgling Skyhooks, when Steve Hill left and was eventually replaced by Graham “Shirley” Strachan. Centred on the Pram Factory Arts co-op many of the musos coagulated into bands, or like Rod, played for theatrical shows like Steve Spears’ Africa and Stud or the Whittle Family cabarets at the Flying Trapeze.
